uniquehistoricsmell.Theteamanalyzedchemicalsfromancientbooksandfurniture.Theycapturedandexamined

airsamplestoseparate,identifyandmeasuresmell-relatedcompoundsinthelibrary.

ThoughStrlič,asananalyticalchemist,couldexaminethesechemicalcompounds,interpretingpeople’s

sensoryexperiencerequiresadifferentapproach.Researchersinvitedordinaryvisitorstodescribethelibrary’s

smellwithgivenadjectivesandtheirownwords.Commondescriptionsincludedwoody,smoky,earthyandvanilla

(香草味的),whichcanhelpjudgetheconditionofagedpaper.Finally,theteammatchedthesesensorydescriptions
