In2017,JennilerQuinlan,aprofessoroffoodsafely,andhercolleagues,collectedkitchenspongesfrom
100homes,findingthatonly1%—2%ofthosespongescontainedbacterialinkedtofoodpoisoningin
humansandthattheonesdidcontainedonlysmallamountsofharmfulbacteria."Thevastmajorityof
bacteriaonspongesdonotcauseillness,andthey'rejustgoingtomakethemsmell,nsaysQuinlan.

thosedisease-causingbacteriaonthere,andstudieshavefoundthatthosebacteriacanbeseparatedfrom
