beabandonedin1975becausetherewassimplynowaytogettoit.TheUnitedStates

hadusedupitsApollorocketsandthefirstspaceshuttlewouldn'tbelauncheduntil1981.

Eventually,Skylab'sorbitdecayed,andthestationfelltoEarthin1979.Atthetime,

somepeoplefearedthatthedebris(碎片)mightlandinaninhabitedarea,andafew

peopleevenbuilt"Skylabshelters.'However,therewasnoreasontopanic;Skylab

burnedupharmlesslyoverAustralia.In1986,theSovietUnionlaunchedanotherstation,

Mir("peace").Althoughdamagedbyanon-boardfireandacollisionwithasupply

rocket,Mirstayedinorbitfor15years,andbothU.S.andRussiancrewmen,whowould

laterserveontheISS,trainedonMir.NewdesignsforspacestationsTheISSandearlier

spaceslaliunsareafarcryfromthespacestationsdescribedbysciencefictionwriters

anddreamers,andevenbyscientistsearlierinthecentury.AfterWorldWarH,many

Germanrocketscientistswhohadworkedonweaponsprogramsimmigratedtothe

UnitedStatesandtheSovietUnion.WerneryonBraun,themostfamousofthese

scientists,playedavitalroleintheearlydaysoftheU.S.spaceprogram.ItwasVon

Braunwhodecidedthatalargespacestationwasessentialto:hcexplorationofspace,a

firststepthatwouldprovideastoppingplaceonthewaytothemoonandtheplanets.In

theMarch1952editionofCollier'sMagazine,VonBrauncontributedanarticleaboutthe

proposedstationandintroducedtheideaofawheel-shapeddesign.Illustratedbythe

artistCharlesBonestell,thisissuepopularizedthe"spinningwheel"or"donutinthesky"

designforspaceships,whichsoonbecamethepublic'sideaofwhataspacestation

shouldlooklike.ArthurC.Clarke'scollectionofstoriesIslandsintheSky(1952)and

MurrayLeinster'snovelPlatforminSpace(1953)weresetonfictionalspacestationsof

(hiskind.Wheel-shapedstationswerealsofeaturedinsciencefictionmovies.Thereisa

memorablesceneinStanleyKubrick'sfilm2001:ASpaceOdyssey(1969)inwhicha

shuttlerocketgracefullydockswithaspacestationtotheaccompanimentofTheBlue

DanubeWaltz.ThepopulartelevisionseriesDeepSpace9andBabylon5bothfeatured

wheel-shapedspacestations.NASAbeganfocusingattentiononspacestationdesignin

themid-1970s.In1975,aseriesofstudiesconductedatStanfordUniversityproposed

thatclustersofmassivespacestations,eachcapableofhousinglargepopulations,be

constructedattheLagrangepoints.Thesearcthefivepointsinspacewherethemoon's

gravityandtheEarth'sgravityarecounterbalanced.AspacestationplacedataLagrange

pointisnotpulledtowardtheEarthortheMoon:UnliketheInternationalSpaceStation,

aLagrangestationdoesnotrequireboostingbyrocketenginestostayinorbit.These

hugestationsweretobebuilt(olastforhundredsofyears.According(o(hestudies,(he

materialsneededtobuildthestationcouldbeminedfromthemoon.Giganticmagnetic

catapultsonthemooncouldthenhurlthemillionsofcomponentsouttotheLagrange

points.Topayforthestation'sconstructionandupkeep,solarpanelscouldcollectenergy

fromthesunand,foraprice,senditbytight-beammicrowavesbacktoEarth.The

stationswouldcontainresidential,industrial,andagriculturalzones.Theinhabitantsof

(hecolonieswouldincludenotjustengineersandastronautsbutalsofarmers,factory

workers,(eachers,merchants,doctors,artists,andpeopleofeveryoccupation.Ascientist

namedGeraldO'NeillwroteapopularbookcalledHighFromierin1975topromote

SeveraltypesofLagrangestationsweredesignedbytheUnitedStations.Island3,also

knownastheSunflowerDesignortheO'NeillCylinder,wasthemostambitiousdesign.

Itconsistedofahugecylindricalstructure36kilometerslongand6.3kilometersin

diameter.Theinteriorsurfaceofthecylindercouldbelandscapedwithfeaturessuchas

lakes,waterfalls,forests,andmountains.Itcouldhouseuptoamillioninhabitantswho

wouldliveintownsandvillagessetinaparkIikeenvironment.Thecylinderwouldspin

onitsaxis,creating"gravity,"anditwouldhesolargethatitwouldgenerateitsown
