12、ts of landmine use, such as the long-term effects of landmines. The landmines mean that people cannot travel or work safely. Land goes unused, causing unemployment and poverty. There is also the huge cost of treating landmine victims. Their efforts were rewarded in 1996, when a meeting hosted by the

13、 Canadian government agreed to write out an international treaty banning landmines. In December 1997, the treaty was signed, with the support of 122 countries.
