是第一位获得诺贝尔文学奖的美国作家，也是 二十世纪美国文坛最优秀的作家之一。巴比特是刘易斯在1 9 2 2 年发表的长篇 小说，是一部反映美国商业文化繁盛时期城市商人生活的小说。它不仅塑造了一 个典型的商人形象“巴比特”，还漫画式地表现出美国上个世纪二十年代商业文化 的方方面面，具有文化观照和艺术欣赏的双重价值。 源于小说中人物的词“巴比特”已经进入了英语词汇，成了美国中产阶级的代 名词。他们没有一点自己的个性和特色，内心空虚却又自欺欺人的摆出一副踌躇 满志的样子。本文试图从法兰克福学派大众文化理论的四个维度出发，分析了巴 比特中人物在文化商品性、标准化、意识形态化和控制大众心理的背景下所表 现出来的个性特征。着重阐述了大众文化在一方面丧失了艺术性，变成了赤裸裸 的商品，另一方面作为肯定性、单向度的文化，宣扬统治阶级的意识形态并从心
