摘要 作为一名二十世纪初美国著名的文学艺术家，薇拉凯瑟以描写1 9 世纪末 在美国中西部谋生的移民而闻名，尤其以其塑造的勇敢、坚强、能干、能克服生 活中重重困难的女性拓荒者而著称。自凯瑟的性取向公诸于世，许多传记作者及 评论家开始研究凯瑟的同性恋身份，这个长期被忽视或否认的事实，对其作品的 内容及形式是否有很大的影响。本文旨在研究凯瑟本人的性别身份对她在作品中 的人物塑造的影响，使用性别角色及性别身份等性别理论，从取名、穿着、行为、 兴趣、性格等各方面，对凯瑟及其作品中的中性角色的性别身份进行探索，分析 在当时具有严格的性别角色的社会中，性别角色的不一致给他们带来的影响。并 得出以下结论：凯瑟通过采用男性身份并在其作品中塑造具有女性气质的男性和 具有男性气质的女性，对传统的性别角色进行挑战和颠覆。本文从一个全新的视
