Part IIListening Comprehension(30 minutes)Section ADirections: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 longconversations. He meant thatwe gain personal identity as we communicate with others. In the earliest years of ourlives, our parents tell us who we are.“Youre26.”“Youre so strong.”We firstsee ourselves through the eyes of others, so their messages form important27ofour self-concepts. Later we interact with teachers, friends,28partners, andco-workers who communicate their views of us. Thus, how we see ourselves reflectstheviewsofusthatotherscommunicate.The29connectionbetweenidentityandcommunication is dramaticallyevident in children who30human contact. Case studies of children who wereisolated from others reveal that they lack a firm self-concept,and their mental andpsychological development is severely hindered by lack of language.Communication with others not only affects our sense of identity but also directlyinfluences our physical and emotional31. Consistently, research shows thatcommunicating with others promotes health, whereas social isolation32stress,disease, and early death. People who lack close friends have greater levels of anxietyand depression than people who are close to others. A group of researchers reviewed33studies that traced the relationship between health and interaction with others. The conclusion was thatsocial isolation is34as dangerous as high bloodpressure, smoking and obesity. Many doctors and researchers believe that lonelinessharms the immune system, making us more35to a range of minor and majorillnesses.PartIIIReadingComprehension(40 minutes)Section ADirections:In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required toselect one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bankfollowing the passage. Read the passage through carefully before makingyour choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Pleasemark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 witha single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in thebank more than once.Questions 36 to 45 are based on the following passage. To understand why we should be concerned about how young people read, ithelps to know something about the way the ability to read evolved. Unlike the abilityto understand and produce spoken language, the ability to read must be painstakingly36by each individual. The“reading circuits”we construct in the brain can be37or they can be robust, depending on how often and how38we use them. The deep reader enters a state ofhypnotic trance(心醉神迷的状态). Whenreaders are enjoying the experience the most, the pace of their reading39slows.The combination of fast, fluent decoding of words and slow, unhurried progress onthe page gives deep readers time to enrich their reading with reflection and analysis. Itgives them time to establish an40relationship with the author, the two of them41in a long and warm conversation like people falling in love. This is not reading as many young people know it. Their reading is instrumental:thedifference between what literary critic Frank Kermode calls“carnal(肉体的)reading”and“spiritual reading.”If we allow our offspring to believe carnal reading isall there isif we dont open the door to spiritual reading, through an early42on discipline and practicewe will have43them of an enjoyable experiencethey would not otherwise encounter. Observing young peoples44to digital devices, someprogressiveeducators talk about“meeting kids where they are,”molding instructionaround their onscreen habits. This is mistaken. We need,45, to show them someplace theyve never been, a place only deep reading cantake them. acquiredI)intimatedingAB) actuallyJ) notwithstanC) attachmentK) petitionD) cheatedL) ratherE) engagedM) scarcelyF)feebleN)swayedG) illicitO) vigorouslyH) insistenceSection BIn this section, you are going to read a passage withten statementsInto the UnknownDirections:attached to it.
