西南交通大学硕士研究生学位论文第i 页 摘要 一般说来，现实世界各种过程的发生都有其外在的原因。人们在用语言描 述各个过程时常常直接指明其外在原因，以便于让读者听者很好地明白事情的 全部真相。这一外部原因在语言学上被称为“动因”( h a l l i d a y ，1 9 8 5 ；1 9 9 4 ) 。 有意思的是，在日常生活中，我们常常碰到许多语言描述并没有指明过程 的动因，而是以种种语言手段隐藏或掩饰动因。这一现象已引起许多语言学家 的注意。过去的研究大多以文学文本为对象探讨动因的语言建构问题( 如 h a l l i d a y ，】9 7 1 ；k e n n e d y ，1 9 7 6 ；b u r t o n ，1 9 8 2 ；k i e s ，1 9 9 2 等) ，这些研究表明对 动因建构问题的探索有利于更深发掘作品的主题思想和作者的写作意图。 我们知道，当今语言学界的一大走势是回归现实生活中的真实语料 ( g r a n g e r ，1 9 8 3 ：3 9 ) 。对于动因的语言建构问题的研究，已有少数学者( 如 g a l a s i n s k i & m a r l e y ，1 9 9 8 ) 把目光从文学文本转向人们同常生活中实实在在使 用的语料。尽管如此，在这一问题上对现实语料的关注仍是远远不够的。本文 作者在借鉴前人研究成果的基础上，尝试从新的角度对现实生活中的政治性语 篇的动因建构特点展开个案研究，试图说明动因的掩饰是政治性语篇的大文 体特点。 本文的个案研究对象是2001 年4 月1 日发生的中美撞机事件的相关 报导和评论。作者以分层抽样( s t r a t i f i e ds a m p l i n g ) 的方式从因特网上抽取2 4 篇文章。通过仔细研读抽样文本，并借鉴韩礼德的系统功能语法理论，作者 总结出样本中所使用的13 种掩饰动因的语言手段和策略。为了进一步说明政 治性语篇说者作者对动因掩饰手段的了然于胸和有意识运用，本文具体分析 了抽样文章描述撞机事件的四个重要细节时所体现的动因建构特点，得出的结 果表明政治性语篇的作者，说者有很强的动因掩饰意识，他们频繁地使用各种演 示动因的语言手段和策略。本文又从语篇的层面上对抽样中的一整篇文章的动 因建构特点进行了分析，进一步证明动因的掩饰是英语政治性语篇的一大文体 特点。 本文的研究从一个侧面证明了英语政治性语篇中语言的微妙之处，对于英 语学习和教学工作有所启示，尤其在培养翻译和外交人员的政治敏感度方面有 一定借鉴作用。 关键词：动因；动因建构：动因的掩饰；及物性；情态 a b s t r a c t g e n e r
