That meant she was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them. I stood against the wall and daydreamed what Id rather be doing. “Almost anything”, I sighed unhappily. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didnt have a gift for it. It didnt come to me naturally. I thought back to happier times when I was writing stories and acting them out with my friends. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt it my duty to try.The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music.“Hello,” I heard a voice behind me. I turned around to see a little girl standing behind me, eating an apple. But before I could make any response, Mrs. Windsor walked into the room and announced, “Jennifer, this is my niece, Pasha. Pasha, this is Jennifer. Pasha will be giving you your lesson today.” she then exited to the kitchen.Pasha set her apple down on the side table and slid beside me on the piano bench.“What piece do you like best?” she asked.“What do you mean?” I asked. “Theyre all the same to me. I dont know.Pasha looked at me, rather puzzled, then opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I have to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist. After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didnt know what she meant.“Like a story. What story is being playing out within the music?”“I guess Ive never thought about it before. I dont know.”“Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and shes picking flowers from the waters edge. Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried away by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princesss horse sees her in trouble,” Pasha continued, “and races to the rivers edge. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse.” Pasha finished with a big smile and looked at me.“Arent you the girl who tells the stories?” she asked.“I guess. I do tell a lot of stories.”“Oh, yes! Well, all you have to do is learn to hear the stories in the music.”“Ive never thought it that way.”“Lets try another one, shall we?” Pasha smiled.24. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads. The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.Smell, which determines the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to distinguish up to 10,000 smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes, which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites. In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus. However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell nerve systems. 28. What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out? A. The category of food smells.B. The logical part of human brain. C. The nature of human olfactory system. D. The relationship between food and feelings.29. Which of the following can help people concentrate?A. Bread.B. Fruits.C. Coffee.D. Fast food.30. What do we know from the last paragraph?A. Some people can recognize up to 50 smells.B. Every person has a different pattern of genes.C. Different people are sensitive to different smells.D. There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.31. What is the passage mainly about?A. Logic and behaviour. B. Smell and its influence.C. Sense ability and food tastes.D. Olfactory genes and its system.DTwo of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table. I dont only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. Its equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldnt be here. But then I thought about the fact that hes 84 years old and I realized that I shouldnt give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that Im doing the right thing. Im buying myself peace of mind and thats the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being. 32. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule? A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated. B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working. C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better. D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone. 33. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to _. A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor B. meet her father who was already an old man C. join in the holiday celebration of the company D. finish her work before the deadline approached34. The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _. A. abandoned B. lackedC. avoidedD. wasted35. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Emotional Well-being B. The Two Saddest Words C. The Most Useful Rule D. The Peace of Mind第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Being Left-handed in a Right-handed World The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left? 36 The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, its assumed that left-handedness has a genetic component to it. 37 In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that its kind of random. Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. 38 In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at Gods right side. Gods left hand, however, is the hand of judgement. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. 39 A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite. 40 People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed, including Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in. A. In other words, left-handers are born that way. B. Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability.C. The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.D. Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?E. Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing?F. In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.G. Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before. 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分)第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D),选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。A Very Special OlympianThe professor was searching for student volunteers in the lecture room for a Special Olympics event.
