And you?W: Fine, too. Thank you. And, Mike, what are you doing recently?M: Well. Im learning a foreign language.W: Ah? Then would you please tell me how you study it?M: Okay, uh, first of all, I surround myself in the language that I learn. Uh, for example, I often watch a movie in that language, uh, from which I can learn vocabulary and phrases. Uh, I also usually watch TV, news reports, or radio reports, you know, anything so that I can hear the language regularly. All this is really helpful, and keep me encouraged. W: Great. Then what next? M: Uh, next, I always keep a situational notebook. Uh, for example, uh, in a restaurant, I use, uh, a certain phrase over and over again, and if I remember just one particular phrase in each setting, then I can immediately speak that language and have more confidence.W: Wow! How wonderful you are! You must be learning the language well.M: Of course. I dont have room in my suitcase to pack a coat, so Im going to wait until I get there and buy it when I really need it.W: Are you going to take anything else?M: They say it rains cats and dogs in the spring, but again, Ill probably just wait and buy a raincoat or an umbrella later on. But, Im going to take a good pair of shoes because I plan on walking to and from school every day.W: Do you need any clothing for formal occasions?M: Well, Ill probably take some nice slacks, a dress shirt, and a couple of crazy ties or two. Man dirties the air with gasses and smoke, poisons the water with chemicals and other substances, and damages the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. Man also pollutes his surroundings in various other ways. For example, people ruin natural beauty by scattering junk and litter on the land and in the water. They operate machines and motor vehicles that fill the air with disturbing noise. Nearly everyone causes pollution in some way. Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing mankind today. Badly polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of soil reduces the amount of land available for growing food. Environmental pollution also brings ugliness to mans naturally beautiful world. Water pollution reduces the amount of pure, fresh water that is available for such necessities as drinking and cleaning, and for such activities as swimming and fishing. The pollutants that affect water come mainly from industries, farms, and sewerage systems. Industries dump millions of tons of waste products into bodies of water each year. Wastes from animals and plants and hundreds of other substances, wastes from farms include animal wastes, fertilizers, and pesticides. Most of these materials drain off farm fields and into nearby bodies of water. Sewerage systems carry wastes from homes, offices, and industries into water. We have but one earth. So lets try our best to stop polluting the earth.听第4段对话,回答第1012题。Text 4W: English Language Center. May I help you?M: Yes. Im calling to find out more information about your program. Im calling for a friend who is interested in attending a US university.W: And thats the kind of, uh, instruction that we provide, from basic communication courses to content-based classes, such as computer literacy, intercultural communication, and business English.M: Great! What is your final application time for the next term?W: Well, we ask applicants to apply no later than two months before the term begins. This gives us time to deal with things like the application form and so on.M: All right.
