11 48. what makes a gift special? is it the price you see on the gift receipt?or is it the look on the recipients face when they receive it that determines the true value? what gift is worth the most? this christmas i was debating what to give my father. my dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. i pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for christmas shopping for him when i came across a message on my phone that i had locked. the message was from my father.my eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in wyoming, and underneath a poem by william blake. the flower, a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. my dad had been reciting those words to me since i was a kid. that may even be the reason why i love writing. i decided that those words would be my gift to my father.i called back. i told my mom to go without me and that i already created my gift. i sent the photo of the creamcolored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. as i was arranging the details another poem came to mind. the poem was written by edgar allan poe;my dad recited it as much as he did the other.i typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. the poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching i found the perfect picture. the image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. as i watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood, i felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate. christmas soon arrived. the minute i saw the look on my dads face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, i knew i had given the perfect gift.56. the idea for a special gift began to form when the author was _.adoing shoppingbhaving a debatecreading a message dleaving c细节理解题。 根据第三段中的i typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. 49. i was blind, but i was ashamed of it if it was known. i refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. after all, i was a teenage girl, and i couldnt bear people to look at me and think i was not like them. i must have been a terrible danger on the roads. coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work. one evening, i got off the bus about halfway home where i had to change buses, and as usual i ran into something. “im awfully sorry,” i said and stepped forward only to run into it again. when it happened a third time, i realized i had been apologizing to a lamppost. this was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. so i carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldnt stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. no one else was there and i had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.generally in this situation, because i hated showing i was blind by asking for help, i tried to guess at the sound. sometimes i would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. in the end, i usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help. but on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. of course i heard plenty of buses pass, or i thought i did. but because i had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, i let them all go by. i stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. then i gave up. i decided to walk on to the next stop.36. the girl refused to ask for help because she thought _. ashe might be recognized basking for help looked silly cshe was normal and independent dbeing found blind was embarrassing37. after the girl got off the bus that evening, she _. abegan to run bhit a person as usual chit a lamppost by accidentd.was caught by something38. sound to stop a bus? aother vehicles also stopped there. bit was unreliable for making judgments. cmore lorries than buses responded to the girl. dit took too much time for the girl to catch the bus.40. finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping _. ato find people there bto find more buses there cto find the bus by herself there dto find people more helpful there【要点综述】这是一篇记叙文。 由本文第一句(i was blind, but i was ashamed of it if it was known.) 由第二段前三句,特别是第三句(when it happened a third time, i realized i had been apologizing to a lamppost.) 根据第三段i tried to guess at the sound. sometimes i would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away.和第四段的but because i had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, i let them all go by. 从i had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself可知,她本人不想拦车了,又由managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help可知,她是决定找人帮忙了,而在本站没有人,去下一站当然就是希望在那里可以找到人帮忙。50.at exactly eleven sir percival knocked and entered, with anxiety and worry in every line of his face. this meeting would decide his future life, and he obviously knew it.“you may wonder, sir percival,” said laura calmly, “if i am going to ask to be released(免除)from my promise to marry you. i am not going to ask this. i respect my fathers wishes too much.”his face relaxed a little, but one of his feet kept beating the carpet.“no, if we are going to withdraw(退出)from our planned marriage, it will be because of your wish, not mine.”“mine?”he said in great surprise.“what reason could i have for withdrawing?”“a reason that is very hard to tell you.”she answered.“there is a change in me.”his face went so pale that even his lips lost their color. he turned his head to one side.“what change?”he asked, trying to appear calm.“when the promise was made two years ago,”she said, “my love did not belong to anyone. will you forgive me, sir percival, if i tell you that it now belongs to another person?”“i wish you to understand,” laura continued,“that i will never see this person again, and that if you leave me, you only allow me to remain a single woman for the rest of my life. all i ask is that you forgive me and keep my secret.”“i will do both those things,”he said. then he looked at laura, as if he was waiting to hear more.“i think i have said enough to give you reason to withdraw from our marriage,”she added quietly.“no. you have said enough to make it the dearest wish of my life to marry you,”he said.60. how did percival feel during his meeting with laura?aangry. bcalm.cnervous. dexcited.61we can learn from the passage that _.alaura had once promised to marry percivalblauras father wished to end her marriagecpercival had been married to laura for two yearsdpercival asked to be released from the marriage62the passage is probably taken out of _.aa novel ba reportca diary dan essay【要点综述】本文是一篇记叙文。 从第一段“with anxiety and worry in every line of his face”、第三段“his feet kept beating the carpet”和第八段“trying to appear calm”可推出percival很紧张。 51.proudly reading my words, i glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. confused, i glanced toward my stonefaced teacher. having no choice, i slowly raised the report i had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “what could be causing everyone to act this way?”quickly, i flashed back to the day miss lancelot gave me the task. this was the first real task i received in my new school. it seemed simple: go on the internet and find information about a man named george washington. since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, i had never heard of that name before. as i searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! one invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across america. i stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. i called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip(掷)a coin. headsthe commander, and tailsthe peanuts guy. ah! tails,my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, george washington carver.weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, i was totally lost. oh well, i lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what i had done wrong. as a classmate began his report, it all became clear,“my report is on george washington, the man who started the american revolution.” the whole world became quiet! how could i know that she meant that george washington?obviously, my grade was awful. heartbroken but fearless, i decided to turn this around. i talked to miss lancelot, but she insisted: no redos; no new grade. i felt that the punishment was not justified, and i believed i deserved a second chance. consequently, i threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. ten months later, that chance unfolded as i found myself sitting in the headmasters office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. i smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my opinion to skip the sixth grade. justice is sweet!60what did the authors classmates think about his report?acontroversial. bridiculous.cboring. dpuzzling.61why was the author confused about the task?ahe was unfamiliar with american history.bhe followed the advice and flipped a coin.che forgot his teachers instruction.dhe was new at the school.62the underlined word“burning”in para. 3 probably means _.aannoyed bashamedcready deager63in the end, the author turned things around _.aby redoing his taskbthrough his own effortscwith the help of his grandfatherdunder the guidance of his headmaster【要点综述】本文讲述了作者作为一个外来移民初入美国学校时,由于对美国历史不了解而闹出的一个笑话,但作者通过努力最后终于提高成绩并实现跳级。 “bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes.” 根据第二段“since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country”可知,作者是从别的国家初到美国,所以对美国历史不了解而闹了笑话。 第三段中“i was totally lost.” 根据第四段“consequently, i threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year.” 52. one of my wonderful memories is about a christmas gift. unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装) on september 11th, 1958, mum gave birth to richard. after she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, “i promised you a gift, and here it is. ”what an honor! i turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. i played with it day and night. i sang to it. i told it stories. i told it over and over how much i loved it! one morning, however, i found its bed empty. my doll was gone! i cried for it. mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. it had a fever. for several days, i heard mum and dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”, which sounded ominous. christmas was coming. “dont expect any presents this year,” dad said, pointing at the socks i hung in the living room. “if your baby brother lives, thatll be christmas enough.” as he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. id never seen him cry before. the phone rang early on christmas morning. dad jumped out of bed to answer it.from my bedroom i heard him say, “what? hes all right?” he hung up and shouted upstairs. “the hospital said we can bring richard home!” “thank god!” i heard mum cry. from the upstairs window, i watched my parents rush out to the car. i had never seen them so happy. and i was also full of joy. what a wonderful day! my baby doll would be home. i ran downstairs. my socks still hung there flat. but i knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!56. what happened to the author on september 11th, 1958? a. he got a baby brother.b. he got a christmas gift. c. he became four years old.d. christmas gift.d. memories of a happy family.【要点综述】“我”四岁时母亲给了“我”一件特殊的圣诞礼物:人娃娃我可爱的弟弟richard。 从第四段最后两句as he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. id never seen him cry before. 53.as a young boy, i sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. he was a rural mail carrier, and on saturdays he would ask me to go with him. driving through the countryside was always an adventure: there were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and dad did.in the spring, dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when i was a boy it was such fun to stick your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers.on dads final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each family was waiting at their mailboxes to thank him for his friendship and his years of service.“two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route,” he used to say, “and a story at every one.” one lady had no mailbox, so dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind. once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. one note left in a mailbox read, “nat, take these eggs to marian; shes baking a cake and doesnt have any eggs.” mailboxes might be buried in the snow, or broken, or lying on the ground, but the mail was always delivered. on cold days dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. a young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few buttons on the envelope in the mailbox; dad paid for the stamps. one businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for dad to take to the bank. once, the amount came to $32,000.a dozen years ago, when i traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of dads death, the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. i thought i knew them all, but that wasnt the case.as i drove home, i noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. when my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. one box was painted green, and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: santa claus, north pole. for years children had dropped letters to santa through tho
