partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania.Along with Herculaneum,Pompeii was partially destroyed and buried under 4m to 6m of ash in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.By the 1st century AD,Pompeii was one of a number of towns located near the base of the volcano,Mount Vesuvius. The area had a large population which grew prosperous(繁荣的) from the regions agricultural fertility(丰产).Many of Pompeiis neighboring communities also suffered damage or destruction during the 79 AD eruption. The eruption occurred on August 24.A study of the eruption products and victims indicate that at Vesuvius and surrounding towns heat was the main cause of death of people, previously believed to have died by ash suffocation(窒息).The results of the study, published in 2010,show that exposure to at least 250 C hot surges at a distance of 10 kilometres from the vent (出口) was sufficient to cause instant death, even if people were sheltered within buildings. In 1748,a farmer called Andre and his brother dug a cupboard made of metal. To their surprise, there are a lot of dissolved jewelry and ancient money in it.This news took air.The farmers were thinking of the legend of disappeared Pompeii that ancestors told them. So,many archaeologists, historians, and even treasure hunters swarmed there. In 1876,Italy government agreed with experts to dig the Pompeii out.Through a hundred years working, they dug the Pompeii out completely. The historian Vnya said,“What a horrifying scene! Many people died when they are dormant(休眠的),and some people died behind the door of home. They are raising their hands and breathing.”Comparing with nature, human seems small and weak.We dont have enough power to compete with nature,so we should respect nature and protect the environment to lessen disasters.【语篇解读】庞贝古城始建于公元前6世纪,公元79年毁于维苏威火山大爆发。但由于被火山灰掩埋,街道房屋保存比较完整,从1748年起的考古发掘持续至今,为了解古罗马社会生活和文化艺术提供了重要资料。1.What did the people of Pompeii depend on for a than 400 years, what happened to Kane has confused experts. The city, mentioned in many ancient texts, was on one of a group of three islands in the Aegean Sea.1 Two of the islands, now known as the Garip Islands, are still there. However, the third island,an important stopping point on ancient trade routes,no longer appeared on maps made after the 16th century. No one knew why.Geo-archaeologists have helped solve the mystery.2 New evidence suggests that this former island is a mainland peninsula(半岛) now.Thats almost completely surrounded by water.3At one time,a channel between two areas of land separated(分开) the island and mainland.“The original channel was blocked out,” said Felix Pirson, the leader of the study. That means the space between the island and the mainland was filled with materials carried by running water.Thats how the peninsula formed.4 For scientists, this suggests that the land there had formed somewhat recently, perhaps because of the earthquakes. The scientists are looking forward to doing further testing.5 They said that this could provide them with more information about the area during ancient times.“The aim is to reconstruct the ancient environment to understand history,” said Felix Pirson.A.They said that the island didnt disappear.B.How did the island turn into a peninsu
