do to achieve your dream job Perhaps you think that studying well and then going on to work hard will get you the successful career you want We are constantly taught that our hard work will eventually pay off But a government survey has shown that hard work is not the only thing that will help you to move up the ladder Two thirds of people believe that who you know matters more than what you know when it comes to social activity So are the connections that you have more important than your education Seventy six percent of the people in the survey believed that family background is important in influencing your chances of success They believe that if you are privileged from birth you are more likely to have a successful career especially if your family is wealthy Even if you don t have a privileged background the people you know can still make a difference to your career Networking is a skill which is encouraged by many career advisers Some companies run networking workshops to try and encourage staff to meet other people to communicate and build relationships It s a valuable skill But the survey also showed something quite interesting Although most people believed that networks are more important than education many people put their own career success down to talent rather than background 41 of the people said that their parents income had influenced their life but at the same time another 41 believed that they had achieved their own success So which is more important what you know or who you know It seems that by working hard and making lots of connections the answer may be that both are very important 21 Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined part A Practice makes perfect B Nothing is impossible C No pains no gains D Hope for the best 22 sex because of a special language protein 蛋白质 in the brain The study conducted by neuroscientists 神经学家 and psychologist from the University of Maryland concluded that women talked more because they had more of the Foxp2 protein The research published in the Journal of Neuroscience found that higher levels were found among humans that were women but in rats that were males Their findings came after it was previously claimed that ladies speak about 20 000 words a day over 13 000 more than men This study is one of the first to report a sex difference in the expression of a language associated protein in humans or animals said Prof Margaret McCarthy who led the study In their study the researchers attempted to determine what might make male rats more vocal than their female friends They separated four day old rats from their mothers and then counted the number of times they cried out in the ultrasonic range the frequencies higher than humans can hear over five minutes While both sexes called out hundreds of cries the males called out twice as often they found But when the pups were returned to their mother s cage she fussed over her sons first Tests conducted on the parts of the brain known to be associated with vocalcalls showed the male pups have up to twice as much Foxp2 protein as the females The researchers then increased the production in the brains of female pups and reduced it in males This led to the female rats crying out more often and their mothers showing more interest to them In contrast males became less talkative The researchers then tested samples from ten children aged between three and five which showed that females had up to 30 per cent more of the Foxp2 protein than males in a brain area key to language in humans Based on our observations we assume higher levels of Foxp2 in girls and higher levels of Foxp2 in male rats is an indication that Foxp2 protein levels are associated with the more communicative sex said Prof McCarthy Our results imply Foxp2 as a component of the neurobiological basis of sex differences in vocal communication in mammals 28 From the second paragraph we can learn that A women always speak more words than men B men and male rats have low levels of language protein C McCarthy isn t the first to find females more talkative D women and male rats have similar levels of Foxp2 29 The underlined phrase fussed over in the third paragraph probably means A related to B paid attention to C put pressure on D counted on 30 The researchers carried out the experiments on rats in order to A test which part of the brain is key to language in rats and humans B prove the levels of Foxp2 protein in humans and rats are different C discover the association between Foxp2 protein and vocal communication D determine the reason why female rats are more talkative than male rats 31 Which of the following can be the best title for the passage A Why women are the talkative sex B Tests on humans and rats C Sex differences in Foxp2 protein D Foxp2 protein determines oral ability D Nowadays more and more traditional businessmen feel worried that growing e commerce will decrease their share of the market According to a survey 90 of some people s purchases are made on the computer As they find that by being able to go shopping online and choose the things that they need and have them delivered right to their doorsteps they could no longer be bothered with driving the crowds the noise of that and they usually get a better selection But sometimes they are cheated only to get the things they hate Cornell University Marketing Professor Edward McLaughlin says traditional stores can keep their customers by offering goods like clothing which customers may want to see and try on before purchasing as well as items that are difficult to transport He says some traditional stores are also pleasing pleasing customers with services such as setting up or repairing computers and other electronic equipment Traditional stores also offer social experiences that some shoppers enjoy There is still a lot of emotion in the buying decision that takes place Oftentimes you need that last sense of this is exactly what I want before you part with money And you can t al ways get that online It s a rather cold process As more and more people have Internet access and smart phones online commerce is likely to continue its growth here in the United States and in other countries 32 Traditional businessmen feel upset because A people like to have their goods taken good care of B consumers can always get a better selection by shopping online C more and more young people purchase things on the computer D growing online sales will seize their share of the market 33 According to McLaughlin some traditional stores are keeping customers by A giving customers electronic toys as presents B providing customers with extra services C delivering goods to each doorstep D making their goods better and cheaper 34 From the fourth paragraph we know that A some shoppers like the social environment in traditional stores B the process of shopping online is full of emotion C making buying decisions in traditional shops is difficult D online shoppers tend to be friendly to each other 35 What is the author s attitude towards the future online commerce A Concerned B Doubtful C Worried D
