that students should learn something about how computers work just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal combustion engine 内燃机 has something to do with burning fuel expanding gases and pistons 活塞 being driven For people should have some basic idea of how the things that they use do what they do Further students might be helped by a 5 course that considers the computer s impact on society But that is not what is meant by computer literacy For computer literacy is not a form of literacy 读 写能力 it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a liberal art Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one are two distinct activities A case might be made that the competent citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one Leave that to people who have chosen programming as a career While programming can be lots of fun and while our society needs some people who are experts at it the same is true of auto repair and violin making Learning how to use a computer is not that difficu1t and it gets easier all the time as programs become more user friendly Let us assume that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer to be a competent citizen What does the phrase learning to use a computer mean It sounds like learning to drive a car that is it sounds as if there is some set of definite skills that once acquired enable one to use a computer In fact learning to use a computer is much more like learning to play a game but learning the rules of one game may not he1p you play a second game whose rules may not be the same There is no such a thing as teaching someone how to use a computer One can only teach people to use this or that program and generally that is easily accomplished 41 To be the competent citizens of tomorrow people should A try to lay a solid foundation in computer science B be aware of how the things that they use do what they do C learn to use a computer by acquiring a certain set of skills D understand that programming a computer is more essential than repairing a car 42 In the second job The two people willingly act as part time workers enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full time worker If they each work half the job for example they each receive 50 per cent of the job s wages its holidays and its other benefits 7 Job sharing differs from conventional part time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people Job sharing by contrast is not designed to address unemployment problems its focus rather is to provide well paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities As would be expected most job sharers are women A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain s Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age Subsequent studies have come up with similar results Many of these women were re entering the job market after having had children but they chose not to seek part time work because it would have meant lower status Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full time work after a long absence The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one position jobs However to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed each person needs to know the strengths weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position Moreover there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones In sum for a position to be job shared well the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals 5 In what way is work sharing different from job sharing A Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs B Work sharing requires more working hours C Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary D Work sharing depends on the employer s decision 6 According to Paragraph 4 young mothers preferred job sharing to 8 conventional part time work mainly because A they were over ideal working ages B they sought higher social status C they had difficulty finding full time jobs D they had to take care of both work and family 7 In job sharing the partners should A enjoy equal social status B have similar work experience C know each other very well D keep in touch with each other 8 The main purpose of the passage is to A discuss how to provide more jobs B describe job sharing in general C recommend job sharing to women D compare job sharing with work sharing 参考答案 5 8 ABCB 结束 A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading It is remarkable first for what it contains the range of news
