文档简介

The primary reason I chose Maynooth as my study abroad destination is that its academic focus is highly compatible with my career path My academic interests span across multiple fields of study as reflected by my two majors and three minors this matches well with the curriculum offered at Maynooth Maynooth s curriculum emphasizes on Sociology and Engineering as its strongest fields while also offering a wide range of classes in Computer Science Math Music and Psychology this range of subjects encompasses all of my majors and minors My major in Computer Science requires me to take Operating Systems and fortunately that is a class offered at Maynooth There also are a couple classes there I would find interesting for my Psychology major such as Conceptual Philosophical Professional Issues in Psychology and Thought Language Social Cognition In addition I could take a music instruction class or music history class to finish off my music minor To add breadth to my experience I will definitely take a class in local history or art maybe Ireland and Vikings Classes of such topics will offer an interesting perspective on Sociology including a lot of the Sociology classes built around important local issues like politics race sexuality and international relations Maynooth also has a wider ranging of Sociology curriculum to choose from than does DU Since I foresee myself studying Social Psychology or perhaps getting a Master degree in Social Work in the long term being immersed in Irish culture of Sociology will add to my understanding in humanity and society This is what makes up my motivation career wise to study abroad in Ireland Even more my appreciation of Social Psychology will be enhanced by becoming acquainted with and observing people from the Irish society It has been three years that I have lived in Denver including one year as a high school exchange student I came to know this city so well the streets the bridges the bushes and lakes and crowds on 16th Street and now just thinking about leaving for one semester I am reluctant to leave everyone I know behind There is a voice in my head asking me Do I really have to go But I know the answer already I always knew it Yes I want to I had a difficult time when I first came to DU as an international student not knowing anyone not knowing what to do And yet I never learned so much as I did when trying to mix into the American culture It took a lot of effort to obtain good grades and take on various job positions to meet the people I enjoyed I learned the cultural norms from my own experience and the hardest experiences taught me the most I came to see what I want for myself who I am and reached peace with myself while I spent the two years growing at DU Despite all I have experienced study abroad in Ireland will still be challenging But besides advancing professionally as I addressed in the first essay I am also expecting to learn a lot from exploring a new culture and meeting new people In addition to study abroad whenever I got a chance it was fascinating to take a glimpse at a foreign country Whether it is going to college in US planning a trip to the Philippines or having an emergency layover in Japan I would notice the subtle differences in the way people interact their special tricks in accents and how they handle controversial issues More fundamentally however or surprisingly people separated by vast distances share so much in common that the uniformity of humanity overcomes borderlines Especially in this age of globalization when a single message can spread across the earth in seconds it is important to realize that communication and understanding can happen even between conflicting races whose past was lain with biases or hatred In this sense study abroad is global communication carried out at the very basic level and I will be proud to be part of it Part of the meaning of traveling is to overcome your own fear and to know yourself as someone you did not know before Even though Denver now feels like home to me I want to get out of my comfort zone and head out again It will be a place I have always looked forward to and maybe can stay for more years to come later in life Because I am already a study abroad student in US the most prominent part of my identity is of course being an international student from China Having experienced everything about leaving my home country culture shock and establishing new relationships I have experienced a fair amount on what study abroad is like Yet my immersion and knowledge in America culture has not progressed far enough as someone growing up in US My study abroad advisors have emphasized that even among English speaking countries it might be surprising how much culture shock one can experience As an outsider to Western cultures by studying abroad in Ireland I will gain more insights on how another Western culture can be different from US culture In the past every country I have visited was like a new adventure And to me someone who has adapted to two very different cultures I will bring a more flexible perspective when I inspect other societies Other than the simple fact that I am Chinese I was raised in a rather conservative family in a big city DU is the most suburban location I have lived in so far and I would love to try out a more rural lifestyle as I will experience at Maynooth Also at DU I started to see that life need not be scripted but can take many forms People here can follow their sexual orientation establish a career of their dreams and head to any place in the world where they truly fit Back in China even though the country has opened up in the past few years some people still cannot acknowledge women as individual beings who can support themselves and lead their own lives I was told on various occasions that I do not need to try so hard in school or should just marry off The fact that I am a girl did not stop me from coming to college alone taking Computer Science as one of my majors or excelling in my classes I plan to further prove myself in this study abroad opportunity and much more to come As mentioned above I am a bit afraid heading to a new country alone having to rebuild all the relationships on my own I know already that I am not a natural outreacher it takes a lot of effort and time for me to become comfortable with people The one semester we have for study abroad is really short compared to local students I do not know if that is enough time for me to mix in and make friends Even more because I chose to study abroad in the winter spring quarter I will not be able to see a lot of my friends from DU for a while who are planning to study abroad in the fall Thus being away from home again scares me a bit I have also read about the academic system in Europe which asks for more integral and understanding of knowledge on the students part The two years I have spent at DU has made me well adjusted to its academic system I am used to rushing through the quarter and preparing myself for exams every several weeks Compared to what the Irish academic system asks my writing skills are not refined enough for formal papers and I am not used to assigning resea
