Ability Objectives(1) Learn about how the first edition was put out and how to set a world record and get a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Record; (第二行文字与第一行文字对齐)(2)3. Moral Objectives (1) Help students to learn that becoming a world record holder is a great honor, but only diligence leads to ones success.(2) II. Important Points1. How the first edition of the Guinness Book of World Record was put out and how one can be a world record holder;2. III. Difficult Points1. How to analyze the text and grasp the main idea of the text;2. IV. Teaching Methods1. Listening, reading, skimming, scanning, discussing, (Asking and Answering, pictures, Fast reading ,Careful reading, Group work, Explaining)2. Ask some students to read words and expressions in Unit 1.Step II Lead-in (5 min)Ask some students to say something about The Guinness Book of World Records. T: Yesterday I asked you to find some information of The Guinness Book of World Records. Now which of you would like to tell us something about it?S: T: Good! Now we will learn more about the Gunnies Book of World RecordsStep III Pre-reading (8 min)Deal with the questions in the pre-reading part.T: Scan the text and answer pre-reading questions. Three minutes later we will check the answers.Suggested answers:1. He was the then director of the Guinness Brewery. .2. Step IV Skimming (12 min)Deal with the post-reading questions.1. Ask students to skim the text and find the answers to Ex1 in the post reading questions.T: Now lets read for some specific information. Read the text and then fill in the chart. There is no need to write in complete sentences. Key words will be OK. You may work in groups. Remember you are given 6 minutes to finish it. Six minutes later we will check the answers together.Suggested Answers:(1) 2. Ask students to read Paragraph 6 carefully and then fill in the form. This exercise will help students to remember the steps to get ones record into the Guinness Book of the World Records. Show the following key words on the PowerPoint. contact, decide, send, inspect, confirm, Step V Reading (15 min)1. Deal with the reading part. Play the tape for students to listen. Then analyze the text paragraph after paragraph. In this procedure, students should sum up the main ideas by themselves first, then discuss with group members. (Cooperative learning)T: I will play the tape for you to listen. Then we will analyze the text. (After listening to the tape, students will have a discussion.)T: OK. Im glad you have thought actively and had a heated discussion. Now look at Paragraph One. What can we learn from the first paragraph?S1: 2. Deal with the rest of the text in the same way. 3. Show the following on the PowerPoint. Paragraph 1: How and when the first edition was put out. Paragraph 2: The records that can be printed in the book are put into different categories and some examples. T: From the main idea of each paragraph, how many parts can we divide the text into?Ss: (After Students discussion or presentation)T: Good. Please divide the text and sum up the main idea of each part. (Three minutes later show the following on the PowerPoint.) Part 1: Paragraph 1 How and when the first edition was put out.Part 2: Paragraph 2-4 The records that can be printed in the book are put into different categories. Step VI Explanation (7 min)1. Explain the text and deal with difficult language points. T: We have learned something about the Guinness Book of the World Records. This time we will deal with some difficult language points. Now I will play the tape for you. Please make a mark where you have difficulties.2. After listening to the tape, explain the difficult sentences to students. T: Do you have any difficulties with the text?S1: T: OK. “to keep track of sth.” means “record sth”. As we know only some of the more than 60, 000 new records can be printed every year. We can understand the sentence like this: The editors of the book write down the records and keep them in other ways instead of printing them in the Guinness Book. Step VII Summary (2 min) Summarize the content of this class; Step VIII Homework Assignment (1 min)Write a composition on the field you want to be a world record holder and how you can realize your dream.
