We had misjudged the timing of our autumn trip to see the changing leaves in the Great Lakes States, and I was really upset. No matter how I strained my eyes I could not spot red anywhere. Not even a bit of golden yellow broke through the dull greenery. This vacation was a complete waste. I sat alone in the backseat of our rented car and got angry as we drove north through the dull, dark green. In the front seat my husband and father chatted merrily, obviously unconcerned. Then a motto came to mind: “ Happiness is a decision.” It must have been something my mother said. She was always passing on words of advice. When I was a child she gave me a little black book with empty pages. On the flyleaf she had written, “ Look for a beautiful thing and you will find it.” I was supposed to keep a record of the most beautiful thing I saw each day.I remember spending hours debating what Id write down. A babys dimpled smile? A stone shining with fools gold? Pictures in the clouds, or tulips tipping their heads? I found so many things it was impossible to pick just one. Now, on the road, I played Mothers game again. I took in the all-green scenery. Thick forests lined both sides of the highway. The long conical pines and spruce were seen here and there. Maple leaves danced in the gentle wind. I felt like a girl againsurrounded by beautiful things.Later in the trip, after we crossed the Upper Peninsula and drove into Canada, I found the bright fall plants I had been looking for. But by then Id already seen a million shades of green, the infinite variety and beauty that only our heavenly Father can produce. And that we can always findif we look closely enough.56. What was the purpose of the authors trip?A. To see the green forest.B. To have a sightseeing across America.C. To see red leaves in fall.D. To try out the motto her mother gave her.57. What is the point the author wants to show in the passage?A. Nothing is too difficult if you put your heart into it.B. No pains, no gains.C. Failure is the mother of success.D. Beauty exists if you have an eye for it.58. Which of the following can best describe the authors feeling at the end of her trip?A. Delighted B. Angry. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.59. The underlined phrase “ see red ” in the first paragraph probably means_.A. get discouraged B. get angry C. get ashamed D. get excitedBVery soon a computer will be able to teach you English. It will also be able to translate any language for you too. Its just one more incredible result of the development of microprocessors-those tiny parts of a computer commonly known as “ silicon chips”. So give up going to classes, stop buying more textbooks and relax. In a couple of years you wont need the international language of English.Already Texas Instruments in the United States is developing an electronic translation machine. Imagine a Spanish secretary, for example, who wants to type a letter from the boss to a businessman in Sweden. All he or she will have to do is this: first type the letter in Spanish. The letter will appear on a television screen. After a few seconds the translated letter will appear on another television screen in Stockholm in perfect Swedish. And thats not all. Soon a computer will be able to teach you English, if you really want to learn the language. Youll sit in front of a television screen and practise endless structures. The computer will tell you when you correct and when you are wrong. It will even talk to you because the silicon chips can change electronic impulses into sounds. And clever programmers can predict the responses you, the learner, are likely to make.So think of it. You will be able to teach yourself at your own pace. You will waste very little time, and you can work at home. And if after all that, you still cant speak English you can always use the translating machine. In a few years, therefore, perhaps there will be no need for BBC Modern English, or BBC English by Radio programmes-no more textbooks or teachers of English. Instead of buying an exciting new textbook, the computer will ask you to replace it with microprocessor one thousand nine hundred and eighty-four. Fast, reliable and efficient language learning and translating facilities will be available to you. Think of that no more tears or embarrassing moments. One little problem is that a computer cant laugh yet but the scientists are working on it. Happy learning.60. Silicon chips are_.A. the computer itself B. parts of microprocessorsC. microprocessors D. the result of the development of microprocessors61. According to the writer, you wont need the international language of English because_.A. the computer will be able to translate any language for youB. textbooks are no longer necessaryC. its better to buy a computer than to go to classD. learning English will no longer be a difficult task62. You will _ if you use a computer to learn the language.A. waste much of your time B. speak better EnglishC. do everything at your own pace D. need no translating machine63. This passage is mainly about _.A. what language learning could be like when computerizedB. the computer teaching the languageC. fast, reliable and efficient language learningD. someone who learns English with the help of a computerC1. Job hunters.DThe use of the word imitation reminds me that we ought to make some comments on the risk of people imitating what they see on the screen in the way of crime or violence. First there was always a risk of children acting out scenes which could be dangerous. For example, I remember a woman who was head of a middle school telling me that she had happened to look out of her window when the children were in the playground and had seen them putting a small boy on a chair with a rope round his neck and the rope over the branch of a tree; fortunately she was in time to get there before the child was hung. I remember a film in particular in which the hero who was imprisoned had escaped by electrocuting his guard, the technique of doing this being shown in detail. This was the kind of scene which we could cut for these reasons. In films for young people and adults we always tried to keep off the screen any details of criminal techniques, such as how to open a locked door with a piece of hard plastic or how to open a safe; if we were consulted before production, I used to advise that the details should not be shown. When I gave talks in prisons about film checking I had full support for this, since fathers who were in prison for criminal offences did not want their children to get on crime.Every time I gave a talk in a prison someone used to mention the French film Rififi made by Jules Dassin in 1954. This remarkable film showed in
