(10分) In the summer of 1978 an English man named Steven was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he discovered something strange. Some of his wheat was lying on the ground. The flattened wheat formed(形成)a circle about six meters across . Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat.Three years later a farmer who lived nearby discovered almost the same circles in one of his fields. These circles were largernearly 15 meters across . That same year , another English farmer discovered three circles of flattened wheat on his landone large circle between two small circles. During the following years, farmers in England found circles in their fields more and more often. The circles are called “crop circles” because they usually appear in fields of wheat or corn. The wheat in the circles lies on the ground but is never broken; it keeps on growing, and the farmers can later harvest it. Farmers always discover the crop circles in the morning, so the circles probably form at night. They appear only in the months from May to September. What causes the crop circles? At first, people thought that some kids were making them as a joke, or that farmers were making them to attract tourists.(In fact, in 1991, two men said they made the circles themselves, but many scientists dont believe them.) People tried to copy them: They tried to make circles exactly like the ones the farmers had found. They couldnt do it. They couldnt enter a field of wheat without leaving tracks, and they couldnt flatten the wheat without breaking it.Several times people reported seeing stranger objects near the fields where crop circles later appeared. Many people believe that these crop circles are the messages sent by living things from outer space(外层空间)or the marks left by their spaceships.Scientists who have studied the crop circles try to find out what causes them. In the summer of 1990 some scientists spent three weeks in the part of England where many circles have appeared. They had all the latest high-tech equipment(最新高科技设备). The equipmentworth 1.8 million dollarsgot nothing. But one night, as the scientists were watching a field, crop circles formed in the field behind them, which were quite different from the others. The scientists had neither seen nor heard anything. When Steven discovered the crop circles on his land in 1978, he said, “It was just like something that had landed in the field from the air and gone back up again. I dont know what to make of these things.”Crop circles have appeared in England, Japan, the United States and Russia. Experts from all over the world have studied them, and they say what Steven said: They dont know what to make of these things.(1) “Flattened wheat” means _. (10分) (2017增城模拟) 阅读理解Long ago, a wolf called Howler lived in a valley where lots of fruit trees grew. He often tried to climb up the trees to eat the fruit, but couldnt reach. In the valley, an old man named Martin also had a few fruit trees that he looked after very well. But as he was getting older, he noticed that he didnt have the strength to pick the fruit.Martin had the most beautiful fruit trees in the valley, which was why Howler had his eye on them. One day he decided to steal the fruit and started jumping up and down the tree.Martin looked out of the window and realized that the wolf was trying to steal fruit from his beautiful trees. Howler jumped and jumped, but he couldnt reach even the lowest branches of such a big tree.Seeing this, Martin had a great idea: he offered Howler a ladder to climb up, but in return the wolf would have to give him half of the fruit. Howler accepted the deal and began to collect the fruit. For the whole morning, he went up and down the ladder filling his basket with the fruit.Howler soon realized that he could eat all the fruit if he didnt give Martin some. He thought up a new and secret plan. Martin, on the other hand, trusted Howler and even began to think they would be friends forever. But the wolf stole the ladder and went off to other trees in the area for more fruit.Realizing that the ladder was missing, Martin went looking for it. Martin felt very disappointed at the trick and no longer trusted Howler. Though he wasnt angry with the wolf and they became friends again, he never made any more deals with him.At last, Howler learned that he shouldnt trick people and he should keep promises. (10分) Now I know that we black people are much more likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes (糖尿病) than white people. And they often lead to heart attacks and other untreated diseases. For example, black people are three to four times more likely than white people to have high blood pressure and twice as likely as the white population to die of a stroke (中风).New research has found out the surprisingly high levels of salt in many of black peoples favorite meals. I stopped putting extra salt in my food at the table long ago and I try to cut down on the salt. I use in cooking. The suggested daily level of salt for adults is 6 grams. It is easy to see that if you try not to eat too many processed (加工过的) foods and use salt in your cooking within the limit, you wont reach more than the daily level. The research showed how much salt there is in some foods that we buy from restaurants and takeaways. An average salad with rice and peas has 6.2 grams of salt. This is more salt than you are supposed to eat for the whole day.A researcher talked about the importance of home cooking rather than take-outs. At home, he pointed out, not only can you hold control of the salt bottle, but also you can create tasty food which is low on salt. The researcher later provided curry goat and rice and peas. They were low on salt, but completely delicious.I do not suppose Jamaicans are going to stop buying takeaways soon. But if you suffer from high blood pressure, it is probably better not to buy them often.(1) The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 refers to _.A . white peopleB . black peopleC . untreated diseasesD . high blood pressure and diabetes(2) What has the new research found out according to Paragraph 2?A . Black people take in too much salt.B . Black peoples meals are very special.C . Processed foods have too much salt in them.D . 6 grams of salt per day is enough for an adult.(3) What would the writer probably suggest black people do?A . Order no salad in a restaurant.B . Take in no salt for several days.C . Stop cooking their favorite meals.D . Eat less takeaways.(4) The researcher provided curry goat and rice and peas in order to _.A . thank those who came to his home for his researchB . let people know that eating less salt makes one healthierC . show that tasty food with less salt can be made at homeD . prove the less salt the food has the more delicious it is(5) What would be the best title for this passage?A . Watch the saltB . Take care, black peopleC . Say no to takeawaysD . Say no to high blood pressure20. (10分) Last month when I was taking part in a US college interview, I was asked, “ what makes you special ? ” In fact I had answered questions likes this many times since I decided to go to college in the US .college paid special attention to different achievement . For example, a person who is very good at math can go to a famous college but also can be a good football player .This experience made me think again that I must try to find where my own interests might lead me . To be honest, it was not easy . However, I never felt sorry to choose this way because it helped me understand myself . If I took the College Entrance Examination,as we call it gaokao in China, it could never possibly do .When I entered high school, I took gaokao seriously because it seemed to me a great way to show how good at my lessons . However,as I grew older, I realized gaokao did make me work hard at my lessons, but the pressure also pushed many other activities out of my life, like guitarplaying . Although I had no time for it, I will still get to it in the future .No doubt, gaokao provides a way of choosing those who are successful in their studies . But it is really important for all of us to rethink what “ talent ” really is today . This is because we now live in a world in which all of our other human qualities ( 品质)are needed for success, not just the high grade .Ken Robinson once said, “ the society depends on different kinds of talents . ” However, gaokao pays too attention to a persons grades but little to his other qualities. And it is these qualities that makes life colorful and fun .As high school students, we can not change the present situation of eduction, but we are always free to think outside of the box . Althou
