When facing difficulties, courage and a spirit of independence can be more useful than crying for help. Thats what Hong Zhanhuis story of growing from boy to man with family hardships tells us.Hong was born in 1982 in a poor family in Xihua County, Henna Province. When he was only 11, his father became mentally ill and one day came back with an abandoned(被抛弃的)baby girl. A year later, Hongs mother and younger brother both left home because of poverty and pressure from his ill father. Their burdens fell onto the 12-year-olds shoulders: to treat his fathers illness, bring up the adopted sister Chenchen, and to go on to study. Hong didnt give up. Since a young age, he has worked in part time jobs to feed his family. At the same time, he has studied at college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to rent a room near his campus for her, and send her to school. After Hongs story went public, people were moved to tears by his unselfishness. Hard as his life was, Hong didnt abandon his father and the adopted sister, because they needed his help. With his hard - won money, he even aided other students struggling against misfortunes.Today when many tend to worry more about their own happiness, Hongs deeds remind us of what we usually neglect: love and care for others. Without these, none of us could survive. Hong turned down donations from others. He said he felt encouraged by kind offers, but he could depend on his own work.Short of money to buy food, the boy climbed tall trees to get birds eggs for his baby sister. He walked two hours at weekends to buy different things to sell around his school to earn money. Through his hard life, the boy developed an ability to rise above misfortune the made him a hero in peoples eyes.Hongs story shows that with love and willpower, no hardship can defeat a person but himself. So when facing difficulties, dont complain about bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and society and youll find the world smiling back.41Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?AIn 1993 Hong Zhanhuis mother and brother left home for some reasons.BAs a young boy, Hong Zhanhui often climbed the trees to get birds eggs for fun.CHong Zhanhui didnt help others because he himself was very poor.DHong Zhanhui wasnt defeated by hardships which happened to his family.42The underlined word “donations” in Para 3 probably means .Ainvitations to give a speechBsomething, especially money given to help othersCquestions asked by interviewersDchances to be a hero43What is the best title of this passage?AA Warm hearted Young Man.BGoing to School with a Young Sister.CGrowing up to Be Independent.DStruggling against Poverty.BStudents InsuranceWhat Is Covered under Contents?Under the “Contents” section your possessions which you do not have to be listedwill be protected on a “new for old ” basis where items will be replaced as newregardless of their age or condition.“Contents ” include books, radios, audio and video players, TVs, jewellery, home computers, furniture, household goods, other electrical equipment and sports equipment. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages (the taxis of those days ) to get around . The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day . If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to get to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born .The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the first track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the first underground track which was six kilometers (3.7miles ) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day . Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not al- lowed ) and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot, as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding the Underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year.Modern subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground. Today there are 94 large underground rapid transit systems around the world. The busiest of these subway systems is the Tokyo Metro which opened in 1927. This efficient subway has two billion riders per year, and “pushers ” work on the platforms during busy traffic hours to help push riders onto trains. At times, subway cars have been packed with up to 300 people! Shopping malls built in high traffic stations where riders move from one train to another have also helped the popularity of subways in Tokyo. Stations like the famous Ginza Sugo Eki Ginza Consolidated Station include underground department store, supermarkets, restaurants, and specialty shops. Shoppers never have to go above ground!48What problems led the British government to build the London Underground?APollution and overcrowding. Open spaces ate threatened by plans for housing estates and important habitats(栖息地)are endangered by highway construction. To protect the Poconos natural beauty from irresponsible development, the Nature Conservancy(大自然保护协会)named the area one of Americas “Last Great Places”.Operating out of a century old schoolhouse in the village of Long Pond, Pennysylvania, Cook, one of the Conservaneys branches, is working with local people and business leaders to balance economic growth with environmental protection. By developing partnerships with people like Francis Altemose, the Conservancy has been able to protect more than, 14,000 acres of environmentally important land in the area.Altemoses family has farmed in the Pocono area for generations. Two years ago Francis worked with the Conservancy to include his farm in a county farmland protection program, As a result, his familys land can be protected from development and the Altemoses will be better able to provide a safe financial future for their 7- year old grandson.Cook attributes the Conservancys success in the Poconos to having a local presence and a commitment to working with local residents(英才苑居民 ).“The key to protecting these temarkable lands is connecting with the local community,” Cook said, “The people who live there respect the land. They value quiet forests, clear streams and abundant wildlife. They are eager to help with conservation efforts.”For more information on how you can help the Nature Conservancy protect the Poconos and the worlds other “Last Great Places ”, please call 1- 888- 564 6864, or visit us on the World Wide Web at www. tnc . org .52The purpose in naming the Poconos as one of Americas “Last Great Places ” is to “ ”Again support from local governmentBprotect it from irresponsible developmentCmake it a better home for black bearsDprovide financial safety for future generations53What can be learned from the passage?AThe population in the Pocono area is growing.BWildlife in the Pocono area is dying out rapidly.Cthe safety of the Pocono residents is being threatened.DFarmlands in the Pocono area are reducing fast.54What is important in protecting the Poconos according to Cook?AThe setting up of an environmental.BSupport from organizations like the Nature Conservancy.CCooperation with the local people and business leaders.DInclusion of farmlands in the regions protection program.55What does Cook mean by “having a local presence ” in paragraph 5?AFinancial contributions from local business leaders.BConsideration of the interests of the local residents.CThe establishment of a wildlife protection foundation in the area.DThe setting up of a local Nature Conservancy branch in the Pocono area.56The passage most probably is .Aan official documentBa news storyCan advertisementDa research reportEBritain gives up smokingSmoking will be banne
