We like statistics and checklists and operating procedures. Our patients live because we enjoy following the steps. But as we much as wed love to always rely on the numbers. The plan we also know that some of the greatest medical discoveries. Have happened by accident.Derek: Karev, you still need a lift to-oh, myLexie: Oh, my god! What are you doing?! Get out! Derek: UhMeredith: Wh-why are you naked? Lexie: Oh.Derek: I should go.Lexie: God. No, please dont be mad. Derek was supposed to be Alex.Meredith: Okay. Well, Alex left ten minutes ago. And since when are you two stillLexie: Since you caught us the first time.Meredith: Mm-hmm. Lexie, this is Alex were talking about. Emotionally, hes like me three years ago. You cant be having feelings for him. You realize that.Lexie: Yeah, of course not. No. Its-its just sex. Okay? Theres no feelings involved. Right.Meredith: Because you are a no-feelings type of girl. Your heart lives in your vagina.Lexie: It-does not. Okay? I swear. Its not this time.Meredith: Okay. Sure.Lexie: My heart does not live in my-vagina.Meredith VO: Mold: penicillin. Poisonous tree bark: a cure for malaria.Doctor: Morning.Derek: Morning.Meredith VO: A little blue pill for high blood pressure, impotence be damned.Derek: Whats going on? Huh? Doctors: Gotta go.Drug reps: Oh, my god! Mark: Dude! Derek: Why is this my morning? Cristina: So I flip the patient into trendelenburg. Teddy yanks out the arterial cannula and connects the arterial line to a venous line, and then sets up retrograde cerebral perfusion. I mean, like, she was on fire. I was on fire. The whole O.R. was on fire. What? Owen: Nothing. Nothing. Just you two are-you two are friends now.Cristina: Yeah. And hey, you know you can be her friend, too. I never asked you not to be. You decided that all on your own. So be her friend.Meredith VO: Its hard for us to accept that its not always the hard workOwen: Thank you.Meredith VO: Or attention to detail thatll give us the answers were looking for.Charles: Dr. Hunt, I-I just paged you. Uh, theres a trauma on the way. Here it is.Ambulance woman: Weve got a 41-year-old motorcycle daredevil with a closed head wound, penetrating neck wound and multiple blunt traumas.Charles: What was the dare? Ambulance woman: Riding without a helmet apparently. Hes still got some brain waves left, but barely. Oh! Meredith VO: But sometimes we just have to sit back, relax and wait for the happy accident.Cristina: Oh! Oh, my god! Oh, my god! Owen: That isnt gonna help.Charles: Mnh-mnh. Im on trauma today, Yang. This ones mine.Cristina: I touched him first.Gary: Gary from legal. I need a statement from one of you about that fall.Owen: You two decide.Charles: Youre not even wearing scrubs.Cristina: Damn it. This is not over.Charles: Have fun with Gary from legal.Owen: Okay. One, two, three.Arizona: Teddy, hey. I have an old patient up in oncology. And I know that youre really busy with surgeries and st-staring at Owen Hunt. Teddy: What? Arizona: Ive tried to ignore it, the staring. But ever since Christmas, with the guitar and the singing and the stolen looks-well, I noticed it, and I cant unnotice it. Its just, I kind of I like to fix things-people. I like to fix people.Teddy: Oh, no, no. Dr. Hunt and IArizona: Ooh, dont, cause then youre just lying, and thats no good. My point is, youre staring and youre sad. And I think that you need friends that arent Owen. And thats where I come in, with the fixing. Youre going to be friends with me.Teddy: I am? Arizona: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Im an awesome friend. So tonight youll come out with Callie and me-girls night. Oh. Maybe bailey will come, too. Say yes to girls night.Teddy: Yes to girls night.Arizona: Yay! Teddy: Oh, yay. Problem solved. Now for my patient. Elliot Meyer. He needs a lung transplant.Alex: Oh, hey. Uh, Im down with a l-lung transplant.Arizona: Oh, no because you slept with my girlfriend, and I find at when I look at you, I want to hit you with a brick.Alex: Dude, that was, like, years ago.Arizona: Maybe, but jealousys a green-eyed monster, and if you ask any one of my kids, theyll tell you, theres no reasoning with a monster. Dude, run away before I find a brick. As my new friend, dont judge me for that. So my patient, been treatedDerek: I get it. Youre upset little Sloan is gone. But screwing drug reps is not gonna make you feel better.Mark: Yeah, it is.Derek: No screwing drug reps in my hospital. Are we clear? Mark: You were much more fun when you werent chief. You know that? Derek: Get outta here.Mark: Ah. Dr. Webber. Welcome back.Webber: Oh. Thank you, Dr. Sloan.Derek: Richard, hows your first day back? Webber: Uh, well, so far, so good. I had to drop this off.Derek: Im sorry you have to do this.Webber: Well, this drug testing, its part of the rehab program. Just run it under a John Doe, would you? Derek: Of course. Whatever you need today, Richard, and I mean that.Webber: A low-stress day, lets start there-Routine surgeries, a light schedule, home by 5:00.Derek: Done.Cristina: Yeah, I said that. She slipped. The only person liable here is you for keeping me from my surgery.Gary: Call my driver and tell him theres still time to take my flight if he comes straight here.Jackson: You passed out in a restaurant and you have abdominal pain. Youre not getting on a plane.Harper Avery: The pains gone, and whatever caused it, can wait till I get home. Now let me off of this damn thing.Cristina: Were done here, right? Sir, I need you to move to this gurney.Jackson: I got this, Yang. All right? Youre not even in scrubs.Cristina: Sir, I need you to stay calm so I can do a proper examination.Harper Avery: Tell this lady to back off, Jackie.Cristina: Jackie? Jackson: Whatever. Its not-Look, Ive already paged Bailey, and hes not cardio. So you can lose interest, Yang.Cristina: Yeah, well see about that. Sir, Im a surgeon, a very good one.Harper Avery: So is my grandson. So why dont you take your hands off me? Cristina: Wait, hes your grandfather? Jackson: Im serious, okay? I can handle this till Bailey gets here.Cristina: No, because youre not allowed to treat family members, and he has midepigastric tenderness and guarding.Harper Avery: It could be ascending cholangitis. Ascending cholgitis? Really? With only one of the symptoms of Charcots triad? Cristina: Youre a doctor? Harper Avery: Apparently a much better one than you are. Dr. Harper Avery. And your name, doctor? Cristina: Harper Avery.Harper Avery: Uh, no. Thats my name. Cristina: As in the Harper Avery award? Harper Avery: Bingo. Get a new surgeon, Jackie, One with a pulse this time.Cristina: Youre harper Averys grandson? I misdiagnosed Harper Avery in front of Harper Avery. Do you know what that does to my chances of one day winning a Harper Avery? Meredith: Well, could die before then. I mean, he could die today even.Cristina: I just need to operate on my motorcycle daredevil guy, and Ill be fine.Lexie: Is it true Harper Avery is here? Meredith: So Derek walked in on her naked this morning in Alexs bed.Lexie: Meredith! What? Meredith: Oh, Im just cheering her up. Shes having a bad day. Be generous.Cristina: You know what? You cant be having feelings for Karev. Hes like Meredith three years ago.Meredith: I said that.Lexie: I dont have feelings for Alex.Cristina: Yes, you do. Your hearts, like, in your vagina.Meredith: I said that.Lexie: Oh, my god. You are both monsters.Cristina: Were likeDerek: Yang, I heard you met Harper Avery.Cristina: Did you know that pretty boys grandfather was god? Derek: I didnt know. That is kinda cool, though.Cristina: No, its not cool. Okay, hes an entitled brat with no skills except a really good bloodline. Meredith: It is not Jacksons fault that hes related to Harper Avery.Cristina: Oh, whatever, Ellis Greys daughter.Meredith: Huh? Derek: How do I look? Chiefly? Meredith: What, are you nervous? Derek: Hes one of the most powerful surgeons in the country.Meredith: Hes just a guy who happens to have an award named after him.Derek: Whatever, Ellis greys daughter. Admit it. You want to meet him, too.Meredith: Li, yeah.Owen: Thank you.Cristina: Hey, here are we on him? Owen: He was on his way up to the O.R. when he started bleeding out.Charles: Want to give us a hand here, Yang? Cristina: Oh. Big boy needs a little help. No problem. Watch and learn. Clamp.Kathy: See? This is why I dont want you to drive! Mrs. Nelson: I had to get my medication! The store was gonna close! Callie: Im so- -can we not yell? Please. Maybe.Kathy: No, actually. My mothers almost completely deaf, a fact she refuses to accept, which is why she wont learn sign language or get a hearing aid. So we yell.Mrs. Nelson: Dont talk to her. Talk to me.Kathy: Im just telling them what happened! She stole my car again. Alex: Theres a tenderness over the zygomatic process and a hematoma to the left temporal area.Callie: Okay. Run a head and face C.T. Ill get Sloan and Shepherd. Shes got a ruptured tendon in her knee that will need surgery. So shell be off her feet for a few weeks.Kathy: So more waiting on her hand and foot? Brilliant.Mrs. Nelson: I saw that, Kathy! Kathy: Theyre taking you for scans! Thats all we said! Just quiet down. Let the nice doctor do her work.Mrs. Nelson: Why is this taking so long?! Harper Avery: Is it me or are those two women terribly annoying? Bailey: My apologies, Dr. Avery. Were working on getting you up to your own room as soon as possHarper Avery: You said that before. Are you the same shepherd who did the clinical trial on the gliomas?Derek: Yes, sir.Harper Avery: You brought me a neurosurgeon for some abdominal cramps? Bailey: No, I-I-Dr. Shepherd is our chief of surgery, sir.Harper Avery: I dont need a cruise director. I need an experienced surgeon. Page Dr. Grey.Meredith: Im Dr. Grey.Harper Avery: Either the worlds most talented plastic surgeon works here or youre not Ellis Grey.Meredith: She was my mother. She passed away.Harper Avery: Oh. I-I didnt know. Uh, my condolences. Who else then? Does, uh, Richard Webber still work here? Derek: Yes. unfortunately, he is, uh, he is not available today.Owen: Push 2 of ativan. Percy, lets get him on his side. Cristina, watch that neck.Mrs. Nelson: Oh, my god! What are they doing to that man?! Cristina: Oh! Okay. Applying pressure. Get him back into the room.Derek: Ill page Dr. Webber.Webber: As you can see, youve got dilated bowel here and here, indicating an obstruction. Its a good thing that our young Dr. Avery brought you straight in. Dr. Bailey can do the surgery right away.Harper Avery: Was it a student, Webber? A board members wife? Webber: What? Harper Avery: No one gives up a chief of surgery gig, and, uh, they dont ask you unless its for something juicy. So who were you slipping it to? Jackson: Grandpa! Im sorry, Dr. Webber.Harper Avery: It was a joke. He doesnt get me. So, Webber? Derek: Uh, Dr. Webber decided to focus on his research.Harper Avery: Oh, the research line. Well, either way, at least youll be free to do my surgery.Derek: Dr. Bailey is more than capable of performing the surgeryHarper Avery: I want Webber. No offense.Bailey: None taken.Harper Avery: And I want to watch.Derek: What? Harper Avery: Im going to be awake for my surgery, watch.Webber: So much for the low-stress day.Derek: Mm.Lexie: A year after Mr. Meyers lymphoma went into remission, he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that he developed as a side effect to the radiation he received during his cancer treatments.Jill: This isnt new information. I thought you said you could help.Arizona: Yeah, but theyre new to the case, and its important to review the entire history.Jill: Great. Uh, cant you do that on your own time? Elliot: Jill. Sorry. My sister usually waits a few more minutes before going full bitch on new guys.Teddy: All right. Let me tell you what I know. It is gonna be very difficult to find you a new set of lungs. Donor lungs are scarce. Because they get too inflamed while the donor is brain dead. And because your cancer could come back with the immunosuppressants youd be on, you are considered a very high-risk candidate. There are just too many other patients on the list that are lower risk.Jill: Elliot survived leukemia and lymphoma. Nobody does that, but he did. He deserves lungs.Teddy: Unfortunately, these are the rules the transplant board sets out. I-Im sorry.Lexie: Dr. Altman, have you looked into the research theyre doing with ex vivo transplants? Teddy: Ex vivo? Cristina: Well, its a procedure where they take damaged donor lungs-the ones we would normally throw away-and repair them on bypass. Are we doing one?Teddy: Let me guess. You want on my service to make up for the fact that you humiliated yourself in front of Harper Avery.Cristina: Howd you hear about that?Lexie: You made fun of me.Cristina: Okay. Fine. Yes, I-I humiliated myself in front of Harper Avery. And my daredevil gorked before we could operate on him. So I am available for your ex vivo lung case.Teddy: I dont have an ex vivo lung case. Because its only been done in Switzerland and in Canada on patients in much better shape than our patient.Cristina: Yes, but-Okay, performing a procedure as hard-core as this while Harper Avery is in the hospital? Well, I mean, he could hear about it and like it And-and hes a god who hands out awards.Teddy: Yeah, I dont care about awards.Cristina: Oh, come on. Only people who never win awards ever say that. So you think this could be an ex vivo lung case? Lexie: I do not have feelings for Alex.Cristina: I do not care.Jackson: Ah, here we go. Hes giving them the speech.Meredith: What speech? Jackson: About the wonders of medicine. About how as surgeons, you know, were meant to push boundaries and do what no one has ever done.Meredith: Sounds motivating.Jackson: Its cheesy is what it is. And you hear it enough times at your grandparents dinner table, you cant help but want to be a surgeon when you grow up.Meredith: You had a dinner table? I didnt know world-class surgeons had dinner tables. I feel gyped.Jackson: Well, thats cause you havent heard the speech yet.Harper Avery: To be awake for my own surgery, but an opportunity like this, to be a student again, get a new perspective-Its what we got into this business for In the first place-those moments that challenge and terrify and dare us to reach the potential that we were meant to reach. No, lets stop the talk and get into that O.R. and teach those kids, teach ourselves what it means to be great.Derek: Im sorry. I cant authorize an awake surgery, no matterWebber: We can do it. Derek, we can do this.Harper Avery: Thats what I like to hear. Thats the way a chief does things. Shepherd, take note.Derek: Dr. Webber.Webber: Derek, I know what youre gonna sayDerek: No. As the sole person in this hospital assigned to look out for your welfare, I dont support this decision.Webber: I apologize Chief Shepherd.Derek: You really want to do this thing? Webber: I do.Derek: Its on you, then.Mark: Thank you for your help on that project.Doctor: Uh-huh.Mark: Same time tomorrow? Doctor: Yeah.Callie: Oh, let me guess. Still no call from little Sloan.Mark: Nothing. But its okay. Ive moved on.Callie: Okay. Yeah, getting out of bed and not wearing sweats around the apartment all day is a sign of progress. Sleeping with the nurses? Not so much.Mark: Well, I wouldnt have to sleep with nurses If youd put out.Callie: Im in a committed, loving adult relationship.Mark: Tried that. Didnt work.Callie: Okay, whatever. Just come take a look at this face C.T. on my patient. Come on.Mark: Get the hell outta here, Karev.Alex: What? Mark: Get the hell out. Now! Derek: What was that? Mark: I dont like that guy.Callie: Oh, he slept with Lexie once, Mark. You two were broken up.Derek: Actually, hes, uh never mind.Mark: You dont sleep with another mans girl. I learned that the hard way.Derek: Oh, well played.Callie: Oh, dont buy that. Hes acting out because he cant deal with the real human emotions hes having. Ask him how many nurses hes slept with today.Derek: Youre sleeping with nurses now? Mark: You said no drug reps. And Im a grown man. I can screw whoever I want.Derek: Not in my hospital.Mark: What are you gonna do, fire me? Derek: Maybe I will.Callie: All right. All right. Enough with the testosterone. Mrs. Nelsons scans are up.Derek: No bleed. No fracture. Shes good.Mark: Shes deaf.Callie: Yeah. Howd you know that? Mark: Shes got otosclerosis-Abnormal bone growth in the middle ear. If I just remove the bones, shell be able to hear again.Callie: Wait. You can restore her hearing? Mark: Yeah.Callie: But shes been deaf for years.Mark: Yeah. She doesnt have to be.Derek: Just because you removed the bone? Mark: Whatd I just say? She doesnt have to be deaf anymore. I can fix it. Im that good. You still want to fire me? Harper Avery: Not a bad looking bowel, is it, Webber? Webber: No, sir. If I had to guess, I would say it was the bowel of a 50 year old. Suction, Dr. Grey.Harper Avery: Dr. Grey, Ive got a question for you. Its of a personal nature.Meredith: Yes, sir? Harper Avery: If your mother was still working here, would you have chosen to, uh, study at a-a different, lesser quality hospital in order to avoid the advantages of her legacy? Im waiting here, Dr. Grey.Meredith: UmJackson: Dr. Webber, what do you think about intraoperational dye to help determine intestinal viability? Webber: Uh, well, they say that it enhances clinical judgment. Im not real sure.Lexie: I dont get it. Why does he get to scrub in on his own grandfathers awake surgery? Cristina: The same reason why Harper Avery personally requested Meredith grey to be his resident.Alex: Nepotism sucks. Hey, you, uh, want to go grab a bite? Lexie: No. Actually, I am-full.Alex: Really? Cause you didnt seem full last night.Lexie: I said no. Okay, I-I-I am not hungry at all. So just go eat alone.Charles: Excuse me. Sorry.Cristina: Hey, down in front, bigfoot.Charles: Oh, its bigfoot now. Well, you know what they say about guys with big feet.Cristina: Shouldnt you be off learning how to be a surgeon after you let my daredevil die? Charles: My daredevil? He didnt die. After you left, I personally helped preserve his heart function. Now hes an organ donor.Meredith: B.P.s dropping.Webber: I think Ive got a bleeder. Suction.Harper Avery: Did you check the S.M.A.? Webber: Yes, its okay. Dr. Avery, stay calm.Harper Avery: Ill be calm when you find the damn thing.Mrs. Nelson: Whats going on, Kathy?Kathy: Youre serious? Callie: Mn-hum.Kathy: All this time, I just needed to make her go to the doctor? Callie: Well, that doesnt matter now. What matters is that Dr. Sloan can do the surgery right after I operate on the knee. That accident might have been the best thing that ever happened to you.Mrs. Nelson: Whats going on? Kathy: Who are you? Youre like some miracle worker or something. Thank you. Thank you so much.Mrs. Nelson: What the hell is going on? Kathy: Mom, Dr. Sloan can give you your hearing back! Callie: Dont you dare sleep with that woman.Mark: No? What?! Callie: No.Kathy: Dr. Sloan, come and tell her yourself.Mark: Mrs. Nelson! Im Dr. Sloan! I have some very good news for you! Jackson: Okay, shouldnt we put him out? Harper Avery: No, dont put me out. Hang another unit of F.F.P.Meredith: B.P.s 50/80Webber: There it is. Ive got it. Ive got it. Okay, just-How are you feeling, Dr. Avery? Harper Avery: Okay. Heart rates stabilizing. Hang in there just a few more minutes, okay? Webber: 3-0 silk Boki.Harper Avery: Silk. No, use chromic. Dont get lazy on me.Jackson: Yep, hes fine.Webber: Right. Chromic instead, Boki.Lexie: You paged? Oh, my god. Are you doing an ex vivo lung repair? Cristina: My daredevil turned out to be a match.Lexie: You stole his lungs? Cristina: No, I did not steal them. The transplant team rejected them and were gonna send them to medical waste, so I just redirected them to medical research. Now does lexopedia want to be badass and help me on this thing or not? Lexie: Oh, my god. Yeah.Cristina: Okay, so I ventilated the lungs with, uh, CO2 and nitrogen from the pump.Owen: Hey.Teddy: Hey.Owen: Um, you hear about HarperTeddy: I heard about your motorcycle-Oh.Owen: You go.Teddy: No. Sorry. You go.Owen: Uh, I was just gonna say, its kinda cool, Uh, Harper Avery being here.Teddy: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it is. And, uh, uh, your-your motorcycle guy? Owen: Oh, we lost him, but hes a donor.Teddy: Well, thats good.Owen: You know, you should come over sometime for dinner. Uh, Cristina-she-well, she doesnt cook, but if you remember, I do a mean lasagna.Teddy: Sure.Owen: Really?Teddy: Yeah, yeah. Sounds fun.Owen: Okay. Uh, I gotta go.Teddy: All right, yeah.Owen: Uh, talk to you later.Teddy: Mm-hmm.Charles: Okay, I know you love Yang. She gives you the warm and fuzzies with her magical, special heart skills. But those lungs youre transplanting belonged to a patient of mine. And it would mean a lot to turn his death into something meaningfulTeddy: Im sorry. What lungs? You went behind my back. You used my name.Cristina: Yes, yes, but we followed the protocol. We didnt tell the patient.Teddy: You stole lungs, Cristina! Lexie: Which they were about to throw out. She was being green.Teddy: Oh, well, great. Then I dont have to worry about the thousands of dollars that you spent and the fact that no one in this hospital has ever tried this before. Oh, my god. This is about Harper Avery, isnt it? Thats why you did this? Cristina: Why is that such a bad thing? Okay, the point is, is that we could-You can pull this surgery off.Teddy: Oh, wow, thank you. I mean, who needs a Harper Avery when theyve got the Cristina Yang seal of approval? Cristina: Thats not what I was saying.Teddy: All of this ambition of yours, this desperate need to win prizes, it means your priorities are off.Cristina: Hey. It doesnt. Prizes push us to be better.Teddy: They push us to be monsters.Lexie: Hey.Cristina: Oh, so the status quo- not trying then-thats worse.Lexie: Hey! The lungs-look. Theyre-theyre viable.Teddy: A transplant with repaired lungs has never been done in the united states. The risks are tremendous, and with the amount of radiation that you sustained, theres no way of knowing how friable your tissue is or if you can even sustain a transplant.Elliot: Wait. Im sorry. Are you saying you recommend it, though? Jill: No, theyre saying they want to give us a pair of hand-me-down lungs-The ones no one else wants.Cristina: These are good lungs. This procedure has allowed us to repair them so theyre virtually the same asJill: No! Well wait. Well wait until you get the lungs that you deserve.Elliot: Youre so used to fighting, you dont even realize. This is it. I am sick and Im tired and I am ready. No matter what happens, my affairs are in order.Jill: Your affairs are not in order. Dont you dare say that.Elliot: Dr. Robbins, please. Is this my best shot?Arizona: Im not your surgeon here, Elliot. I have to defer to Dr. Altman.Teddy: Its your only shot.Elliot: Then, yes. Do it. Give me the hand-me-downs.Callie: Dr. Sloan, good timing. Dr. Karev and I are pretty much done.Mark: What the hell you looking at? Alex: Nothing, I was justMark: Get out of my O.R., Karev.Callie: Mark, youre way out of line here.Alex: Its fine. Ill go. Hes got serial killer eyes. Im almost done here anyway.Callie: You sure? Alex: Yeah.Callie: That is enough.Mark: Hey, its funny. Did you see the guys face? Callie: No, it is sad and pathetic. Okay? And you have a choice here. Sloan and her baby leaving you can either be the worst or the best thing that happened to you. You can grown up, find a woman to love and have a baby. Or you can be the ass attending who abuses the residents and screws whatever walks into this hospital. So just pick one. Would you drape the ear, please? Alex: Look, its not gonna happen, all right? Come on, man. Five minutes with your grandpappy. Thats all I ask.Jackson: Right, cause the two of us are such good friends.Alex: Well, this would go a long way to help that.Charles: Back off, Karev, if anybodys a friend here, Its me.Jackson: Youre not meeting him either.Charles: Dude, what happened to Mercy West forever?Jackson: That was never a thing. Now leave. I hate it. I hate it when they know Im related to him-The way they treat me, the way they watch me as soon as they find out. And I know the name has helped, but he is not easy. Brilliant, but really not easy to be related to. Its him. 9-1-1. What is it? You paged? Are you okay? Harper Avery: We never got a chance to finish our talk from this morning.Jackson: Our talk? What, are you kidding me? Harper Avery: And you brought Dr. Grey. Thats good, actually. Answer me this time, Dr. Grey. If a spot was being held for you to study at the greatest hospital in this country, would you turn it down? Meredith: A spot? WellJackson: Yeah, he saved a spot for me at mass gen, ever since I graduated, Which is the only reason he came to visit-to try to convince me to take it again.Harper Avery: Its an incredible opportunity.Jackson: An opportunity I dont want. I dont want to work for you. I dont want your help. I dont-look, its enoughHarper Avery: No! I decide when Ive said enough. I-you-you think I am arrogant and overbearing, and youve made that very clear, and maybe I am. But I am also your only living grandfather. And it has become very clear to me today that my time is coming. I dont-I cant l-leave-leaveJackson: Grandpa? Grandpa? Meredith: V-tach.Jackson: No pulse. No pulse here. We need a crash cart in here. Now! Derek: Your C.T. shows that thes been a c complication. Dr. Webber will take you back into the O.R. and fix it right away.Harper Avery: Fine, but youre not putting me out. Clearly a mistake was made. Im not letting that happen again.Derek: Thats not gonna happen this time. Youre in my hospital today. You will abide by my rules. That means you go under general. Your grandson will be sitting in the waiting room as family. You refuse, and I will personally declare you unfit to make decisions regarding your own care. That is how a chief does things. Take note.Webber: Have Bailey do the surgery.Derek: RichardWebber: Look, it couldve been my mistake in there, Derek. Do you understand what this would mean, making an error on this man? I wanna drink, not operate, not hold another mans life in my hands. So please let Bailey do it.Derek: Bailey will assist. Two months ago, you never wouldve told me you wanted a drink. You woulda had one. You can do this, Richard.Mark: I get it. You got used to being the one person she could count on. And suddenly, youre supposed to just move on, get a life that doesnt involve taking care of the one person you thought needed you. Its hard.Kathy: Okay. Yeah. Except, no, I am not gonna miss taking care of her. I wasted years of my life and I was miserable. But now-I can do anything. Right?I mean, I could-I could move out. Get my own place. Have men over. Men that look like you.I was taking care of you, you little tramp.Kathy: Mom? No one asked you to move in. You were getting a divorce. You had no place to go. So you came home. I didnt need you to take care of me. I was fine, happy. But I let you, because I was taking care of you.Kathy: You heard all that? Mom, you can hear.I can? Kathy: Yeah.Oh, my god. I can. I can! Say something. Say something else.Kathy: Okay, uh, Im moving out, mom.I heard that.Kathy: Oh, sorry.Teddy: Damn it.Cristina: What is it? Teddy: The tissue is falling apart. The clamps not holding. Get me some umbilical tape. This is why I hate awards. They dont make us better, just more competitive and stupid. And for what? To put on a dress and eat a bad piece of fish and take home an ugly paperweight thats gonna sit on your mantel for the rest of your sad, empty, misguided life.Cristina: You could do an interposition vein graft.Teddy: What? You have something to add, Dr. Yang? Cristina: No, just-Youve already gotten this far. You could repair the P.A. with a graft. Maybe.Teddy: No. I could do a pericardial patch. I could use his pericardium to do the repair.Cristina: We could start cooling him.Teddy: And arrest the heart. How are we doing on time, Grey? Lexie: Cold ischemic time- three hours so far.Teddy: Which means that we still have enough time to save the lungs if we hurry. All right, Yang, get in there and help me. Clamp. Good. Here we go.Bailey: His bowels are all swollen and hardened. The anastomosis is leaking.Webber: Which explains why he went into shock.Bailey: All in all, Id say this is about the best news we couldve asked for, Dr. Webber.Meredith: I dont understand. His bowels are perforated. Hes leaking intestinal contents.Webber: Because Dr. Avery was allergic to the chromic suture. He didnt know because he was always wearing gloves in his own surgeries.Meredith: And you couldnt have known eitherWebber: Which is why I am smiling behind this mask. Get the 3-0 silk ready, Boki.Teddy: Okay. This is it. Lets take him off bypass and see if these lungs can work on their own. Clamping. There. Come on. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe, damn it.Jill: I just spent the past five hours trying to be okay with the fact that my only brother was dead. And Now youre saying it worked? Hes gonna be okay? Teddy: Barring any complications.Cristina: Hes gonna be okay, yes.Teddy: Would you like to see him? Jill: Yeah.Teddy: Okay, come on.Meredith: Hey. So hes fine. The famous grandfather, the legacy hes trying to force on you, and you didnt ask for any of it-trust me, I get it. Youre putting up walls and youre avoiding him and you dont want to introduce him to your friends. It was the same with my mother. But if she were here right now in a room upstairs, I would want to go see her and make things right with her. And I definitely would want to go learn from her. And you still can.Lexie: Guess who just helped save a guys life by suggesting a highly experimental, awesome procedureAlex: Did you tell Sloan we were together? Lexie: What? And it has nothing to do with me having feelings for you or for Mark or anyone, really. This is about not feeling. You make me not feel. A-and if you cant handle that, if you cant handle being used for sex, then please just tell me so that I can find a guy who can.Alex: Im all about not feeling.Lexie: Youve been through a lot. I-IAlex: Look, dont get all mushy on me. Im just saying, were on the same page. And I got a free 20 minutes. You want to go not have feelings somewhere?
