Besidesthesurrealandhorrifyinglastmomentofseeinghimlyinginpermanentstasis,itwasalsothefirsttimeIcouldremembergivinghimaspecialgameballwithouthimslippinga$10billintomyhandstocongratulateme.HisillnesskepthimoutofwhateverstadiumIwasplayinginduringthelatteryearsofmycareer,thoughthatdidn’tstophimfrompattingmeonthebackfromafarwithaphonecallorbywhatIcouldbestdescribeasa“spiritualmoment,”onewhenIwouldfeelhimsittingonmyshoulderadvisingmewhilereferencingapageoutofhispsychiatricrepertoire.

Ileftbaseballin2023,withaTriple-AcontractonthetablefromtheSanDiegoPadres.Ileftnotforphysicalreasons—I’dhadatornhamstringtendonin2023,butithadn’taffectedmyspeed—butbecauseitwasmyseasonforchange.SoIdecidedtowalkawayandonceIdid,likethevastmajorityofplayers,Iwaslost.ItwouldbethefirsttimesinceIlearnedtoswingabatthatIwouldspendanentiresummerwithouteverputtingonauniform.Evenifyougetagoing-awaypartyliketheonethePhilliesgavemeonJune25th,2023,whenIthrewoutthefirstpitchofthePhiladelphia-BostongameonanationalTV,oncethelastpartygoerwalksoutthedoorit’snolongeryouagainstthatfastball,itisyouagainstyourself.

Soyouswimaroundtryingtofigureoutwhatyoung,retiredbaseballplayersdowiththeirlives.Forme,themomentwasstarkwithouttheguidingwisdomofmyfather,whocouldcommunicatewithmewithjustanodofhishead.

Sincemyretirement,Ihavesearchedforthenextpassionthatcouldfillthevoidthatalifeplayingbaseballcreateswhenyouarenolongerputtingonthosespikes.Itisadauntingjourney,andmanyplayersneverfindthatclosureorthatnextlove.Buttheykeeplooking,evenifotherpartsoftheirlivesarecrumblingbehindthem.Maybethatwaspartoftheproblem:searching.IfoundmyselfagreeingwhenIheardJohnLocke,themaincharacteron“Lost,”say,“Ifounditjustlikeyoufindanythingelse,Istoppedlooking.”

Ofcoursemyfathercouldneverbereplaced,thoughthatdidn’tstopmefromtryingtofindwaystopreservehislegacy,hisworldviewandhiswork.Hewasapracticingpsychiatrist,buthispassionwaswriting.HeleftbehindabodyofpoetrythatguidesmenowthatIcan’taskhimhowhehandledhissonswhenwewantedtosleepinourparents’bed,orwhatthebestcourseofactionwouldbeindealingwithadifficultbusinesspartner,oraracistcoach.

Ihavealwaysrememberedthosemomentswhenmyfatherwouldbespontaneouslyinspiredtowriteapoem.Hewouldjustwalkoffandlockin,pentopaper.Hecouldturnhisalreadyphenomenalvocabularyintomusic.WhenIfoundoutthathestartedwritingpoetryatage7,Iwasamazed.OutsideoftheoriginalcollectionofpoetryIhave,heleftbehindtwobookshepublishedonhisown.

Ididn’tstaylostforever.IfoundsomethingthatIwasn’tlookingfor:avoicethroughwriting.OnlylaterdidIunderstandthatthiswouldbeabridgetounderstandingmyfatherinanotherway.AwaythatledmetoconnecttoapassionIdidn’trealizewebothshared.

Writingintroducedmetopeoplewhowereotherwisestrangersandmadethemguestsatmytable.Wordscanappeartobepartofaone-waymirror,buttheyareinfactsurprisinglyreciprocal—adynamicI’mremindedofwhenIcalluponmyfatherthroughhispoetry.Inthisway,myfatherstayswithme.IcanpreservehisinspiringlegacymorepowerfullythroughwritingthanthroughthehummingbirdpendantIweararoundmynecktohonorhishomelandofTrinidad,orapictureorheirloom.

Aftermyfirstcolumn,Iwentasaguesttoafriend’schurchinChicago.Inthefoyer,awomanwhoalsoknewourhostwaswaiting.SheaskedmewhetherIhadwrittenthatopinionpieceonfear,steroidsandbaseball.ItoldherIhad.SheproceededtotellmethatshetaughtjournalismatNorthwesternandthatshethoughtitwasthequintessentialopinionpiece.Ihadalreadyknownthatformewritingwaspassionandeventherapy,butnowIalsothoughtthatmaybeI’dfoundmynextprofession.

Thankfully,Ialwaysknewmyfatherwasproudofme—beforethemajorleaguedebut,beforetheIvy-leaguedegreethatwasunfathomabletoagenerationofpeoplewhohadonlyrecentlyearnedtherighttovote.Butdes
