theresearchersmadesomewormsintopaste(糊状,5)andappliedittoplasticfilms.14hourslaterthefilmshadlost

13%oftheirmass—apparentlybrokendownbyenzymes(百每)fromtheworms'stomachs.Theirfindingswere

FedericaBcrtocchini,co-authorofthestudy,saystheworms'abilitytobreakdowntheireverydayfood

notsurprisingthatsuchwormscanbreakdownpolyethylene.Butcomparedwithpreviousstudies,shefindsthespeed

ofbreakingdowninthisoneexciting.Thenextstep,DeBruynsays,willbetoidentifythecauseofthebreakdown.
