cametoChinatohelptheChinesepeopleanddiedforthem.
NormanBethunewasbornin189().Hebecameadoctorin1916andwenttoSpainin1936to
treatthewoundedsoldiersduringthewarthere.Hesoonrealised(hatmanypeopleweredying
becausetheydidnotgettohospitalquicklyenough.DrBethunedevelopednewwaysoftakingcare
ofthesick.Heinventedspecialmedicaltoolstouseoutsidehospitalsandclosetothefightingareas
so(haidoctorscouldtreatthewoundedmorequickly.Hisinventionssavedmanylives.
In1938,DrBethunecametoChinaandhelpedtreatthewoundedduringtheAnti-Japanese
War.Althattime,(herewerefewdoctors,sohehadloworkveryhardonhisown.Hisexperience
oftreatingpeopleinSpainwasusefulinChina.Hedevelopedtrainingcoursesforlocaldoctorsand
nurses,andwrotebookssothattheycouldlearnabouthowhetreatedthesick.
DrBethuneoftenworkedveryhardwithoutrestingortakingcareofhimself.Once,heeven
workedforsixty-ninehourswithoutstoppingandmanagedtosaveoverahundredlives.Onedayin
1939,hecuthisfingerduringanoperation,buthecontinuedhisworkwithouttreatingit.Intheend.
