alreadybecomesmaller,aflockbelievedtobe1-mile-wideand320miles(about515kilometers)longwas
seennearCincinnati.
Sadlytheabundanceofpassengerpigeonsmayhavebeentheirundoing.Wherethebirdswere
mostabundant,peoplebelievedtherewasanever-lastingsupplyandkilledthembythethousands,
Commercialhuntersattractedthemtosmallclearingswithgrain,waiteduntilpigeonshadsettledtofeed,
thenthrewlargenetsoverthem,takinghundredsatatime.Thebirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsold
inrestaurants.
Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswherepassengerpigeonsnestedhadbeen
damagedbyAmerican’sneedforwood,whichscattered(驱散)theflocksandforcedthebirdstogofarther
north,wherecoldtemperaturesandstormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocksweregone,
nevertobeseenagain.
In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingthekillingofpassengerpigeonsbutbythen,no
sizableflockshadbeenseeninthestatefor10years.ThelastconfirmedpigeonintheUnitedStateswas
shotbyaboyinPikeCounty,Ohio,in1900.Foratime,afewbirdssurvivedunderhumancare.Thelastof
them,knownaffectionatelyasMartha,diedattheCincinnatiZoologicalGardenonSeptember1,1914.

DocumentingtheThangmilanguageandcultureisjustastartingpointforTurin,whoseekstoinclude
otherlanguagesandoraltraditionsacrosstheHimalayanreachesofIndia,Nepal,Bhutan,andChina.But
