12、 seek religious freedom and move to the New World.,1607 - Many colonies tried to settle, but didnt survive in the New World.,Led by Captain John Smith over half the people died in the first years of the colony. Many were rich aristocrats(贵族) who didnt know how to farm!,Jamestown, Virginia was the fi

13、rst English colony to survive. Eventually, the British had the most colonies in the New World.,Many problems! - bad weather, disease, Native American attacks, uneducated about the land.,British settlements:,French settlements: “New France”,The French had colonies mostly in Canada. Named it “Louisiana” after King Louis of France.,Spanish settlements: “New Spain”,1519,The Spanish invaded Central America destroying and enslaving many established civilizations. Settlements were in California, Florida, S

15、outhwestern U.S. and Mexico.,Mexico,California,Southwestern U.S.,Florida,Eventually England defeated France and Spain and took control of the colonies.,Why is this important?,America speaks English today, not French or Spanish!,English colonies grew over the years eventually forming into 13 separate

17、 different groups of English settlers came to the New World looking for freedom:,1. Pilgrims - Group of English Protestant Christians who believed in Jesus Christ, not the Catholic Church. Were persecuted(迫害) for their faith and treated very badly. Moved to the New World for religious freedom and li

18、ved in Massachusetts.,In 1620, the Pilgrims sailed the Mayflower and landed in what they would name Plymouth, Massachusetts.,The Pilgrims held the first Thanksgiving which is now a major American holiday.,Second group to settle the New World was:,2. Puritans - English Protestant group of settlers wh

19、o wanted to purify the Catholic Church. They were very strict followers of Jesus Christ and the Bible. Believed in working hard, getting educated, and being free. This belief is what founded present-day America.,Also settled in Massachusetts. Started Salem and Boston colonies.,RESULT. . .,Americans are generally Christian.
