Most American marriages, 1 first marriages uniting young people, are the result of mutual attraction and affection 2 than practical considerations. In the United States, parents do not 3 marriages for their children. Teenagers usually find mates through their own academic and social 4 and begin dating in high school. 5 young people feel free to choose their friends from 6 groups, most choose a mate of similar 7 . This is due in part to parental guidance. Parents cannot 8 spouses(配偶) for their children, but they can usually 9 choices by voicing disapproval of someone they consider unsuitable. 10 , marriages between members of different groups (interclass, interfaith, and interracial marriage) are 11 , probably because of greater mobility of todays youth and the fact that they are 12 by fewer prejudices than their parents. Many young people leave their home towns to attend college, serve in the armed forces, 13 pursue a career in a bigger city. Once away from home and family, they are more 14 to date and marry outside their own social group. In mobile American society, interclass marriages are neither 15 nor astonishing. Interfaith marriages are 16 on the rise, especially between Protestants and Catholics. On the other hand, interracial marriages are still very 17 . It can be difficult for interracial couples to find a place to live, maintain friendships, and 18 a family. Marriages between people of different national 19 (but the same race and religion) have been commonplace here 20 colonial times. 1. A)specially B) particularly C)naturally D)fortunately 2. She reached the top of the hill and stopped to rest(停下来休息)on a big rock by the side of the path (本题考查 stop 的用法,stop to do 意思是停止做某事后去做另一件事,stop doing sth 意 思是停止做某事。由题意可知,她到了山顶,停下来在一个路边的大石头上休息,因此应 选择“stop to do” 停止做某事后去做另一件事) 3. Were it not for the atmosphere (要不是考试大大气层),the stars could be seen shining at any time in the day. (本题考查虚拟语气中的“要不是”的表达方式是 not for) 3. The speaker urged the coal-miners to stand up for their own rights (维护自己的权 利),no matter how difficult it would be. (本题考查短语“维护权利” 的表达方式是 stand up for their own rights) 4. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time ofr which the eyes stop -the duration of the fixation -varies considerably from person to person. It also vaies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness. 7 Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but its one thing to improve a persons ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text. Q: 1. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except _ . A. ones familiarity with the text B. ones purpose in reading C. the length of a group of words D. lighting and tiredness 2. The author may believe that reading _. A. requires a reader to take in more words at each fixation B. requires a reader to see words more quickly C. demands an deeply-participating mind D. demands more mind than eyes 3 What does the author mean by saying “but its one thing to improve a persons ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.” in the second parapraph? A. The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted. B. The reading exercises mentioned cant help to improve both the ability to see and to comprehend words. C. The reading exercises mentioned cant help to improve an efficient reading. D. The reading exercises mentioned has done a great job to improve ones ability to see words. 4. Which of the following is NOT true? A. The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time. B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training. C. The emphasis on the purely visual aspects is misleading. D.The eye training will help readers in reading a continuous text. 5. The tune of the author in writing this article is _ A critical B neutral C prssimistic D optimistic 答案:CCCDA 解题思路 1 C。 5 A。 参考前面的结构剖析,作者写本文的主要目的是对那些只关注阅读的视觉因素 的阅读能力课程进行批判,所以答案应该是 A。 (二) Now let us look at how we read.
