whod like to tell us something about the first title? any volunteer?s: let me have a try. i think the text should centre around what happened in the past and what will happen in the future. it should tell us the development of the society from the past to the future.t: all right. what about the second title?s: in my opinion, the text will tell us what will happen in the business in the future if the title “the future business” is chosen. t: good. who can tell us your opinion of the third title?s: me. the text titled “tomorrows world” will tell us what the world in the future will be like.t: wonderful. what do you think the title “a perfect future” means? s: i guess it will tell us peoples wonderful dreams which will be realized in the future. t: what you said just now sounds reasonable. now please read the text on page 20 quickly and choose the best one from the four titles for it. ill give you 3 minutes.after 3 minutes, check the answers with the whole class.the best title is “tomorrows world”. while-readingget the students to get the detailed information about the text.t: now i will give you a few minutes to read the text carefully and understand the details in it. then finish the exercises 2-4 on page 20. after a few minutes, check the answers.suggested answers to exercise 2:when?what are the predictions? 1. in the next few yearscomputers will become handier. shortly all of us are going to use our voices to give instructions to computers. we will be able to download any file or update our computers just by saying a few words.2. by the year 2015the clothing industry will have produced new type of material that will remain stainless no matter what you spill on them. red wine stains will no longer ruin clothes. garments will also be so strong that they will never get old and worn.3. by the year 2025no one will die of starvation because there will be food for everyone. no one will have to live on welfare as everyone will have jobs and discrimination will be a part of the past. there will therefore no longer be any conflict and people will be able to live together in peace and equality.4. by the year 2030development in biochemistry and medical science will have made it theoretically possible for us to live for at least 150 years. tiny, insect-like robots may be sent around the cells of our bodies to assess our health and carry out repairs to keep us healthy.5. by the middle of the centurycomputers that are millions of times smarter than us will have been developed. we will be linking our brains to these computers and a huge database. a new type of electronic human might have developed!6. by the end of the centurywe will have discovered other places in our solar system suitable for living and we will have discovered ways to go further into space.t: right. now that we have learned what the predictions are. please finish exercise 4. ill ask some of you to report your answers. which of the predictions in exercise 2 will happen soon? we can see the evidence now.s: i think the first and the third predictions will happen soon.t: which of the predictions do you think will probably happen?s: in my opinion, the second prediction will probably happen.t: which of the predictions do you think will happen in your lifetime? there is a chance they will happen.s: i guess and the fourth predictions will happen in my lifetime.t: which will happen in your lifetime? but there is a small chance that they will happen.s: i believe there is a small chance that the fifth and the sixth predictions will happen. t: do you know why the writer is interested in futurology?s: because the writer loves talking about the future. he has always wondered about the future. maybe he likes to imagine something, wants to know what the world will be like in the future and can plan the future of the world for a living.t: right. post-reading t: now work with your partner and tell the other which of the predictions you would like or not like to come true? why? then after a few minutes, ill ask some of you to tell your opinion to the whole class.suggested answers to exercise 5:s: i hope computers will become handier and that we are going to use our voices to give instructions to computers. if so, it is more convenient and it is much easier for everyone to use computers anytime, especially for old people. they wont feel it difficult to use computers and computers will be more popular.s: id like the clothing industry to produce new types of material that will remain stainless no matter what you spill on them. we wont be worried that some stains will ruin our clothes any longer, especially the expensive clothes. and children will play more joyful and wont be scolded, even punished for dirtying their clothes. s: i will be happy if we can discover other places in our solar system suitable for living and ways to go further into space. we can communicate with aliens and travel the whole space to have a different experience. explanation play the tape for the students. ask them to underline the difficult phrases and sentences while listening. after the students listen to the tape, deal with some language points.t: do you have any difficulties with the text?s: could you please explain the sentence to us: by the year 2030, development in biochemistry and medical science will have made it theoretically possible for us to live for at least 150 years? i cant analyze the sentence structure and i dont know why “will have done” is used in the sentence.t: first, lets analyze the sentence structure. in the sentence, “development” is the subject, “will have made” is the predicate, “it” is an empty object, “possible” is the object complement and “for us to live for at least 150 years” is the real object. that is to say, “it” refers to “for us to live for at least 150 years”. second, we should pay attention to the adverbial for time “by the year 2030”. generally speaking, we should use the perfect tense with the preposition phrase “by + time”. if “by” is followed by the time indicating the past, the past perfect tense should be used and if it is followed by the time for the future, the future perfect tense should be used. in the next period, well learn the grammar about it and ill explain more about the tense. do you understand?s: yes. thank you.t: do you have any other questions?s: no.t: now ill show the following phrases on the screen. try to understand them better.show the following on the screen: click into, die of, in peace, carry outstep iii culture cornerget the students to read the passage in culture corner and try to answer the questions about it. t: as we know, china is a great country with a long history and many important things were invented by ancient chinese. they had a great effect on the whole world and many of the inventions are still used today. do you know the four great inventions that changed the world?ss: yes.t: what are they?ss: paper making, printing, gunpowder and the compass.t: quite right. lets read a passage about them and you can refer to the notes. after reading it, please try to answer the questions on page 30.suggested answers to the questions:1. from bamboo fiber.2. because of the invention of paper, the chinese were one of the first nations to start producing historical records, maps and literature.3. a chinese craftsman called bi sheng.4. this invention made it much quicker and easier to reproduce written work and led to the first ever mass-production of books and literature. books became more widely available to the public.5. it was principally used in wars and made something explode. for example, rockets carrying gunpowder could be launched at enemy soldiers from a bamboo tube.6. they made the f
