While it is rumored that the origin of his last name is the combination of Spencer and Tracey, Spacey is in fact his mothers maiden name. Spacey participated in drama while in high school and he made his first theatrical appearance with the production of Henry VI in 1981 and in the following year, he made his first Broadway appearance, as Oswald in Ghosts. One of the most meaningful roles for Spacey was his co-starring part in a production of ONeills Long Days Journey Into Night, where he worked with Jack Lemmon, his future mentor. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV, radio, and in many magazines. Almost everyone knows that smoking causes a lot of problems. So how come people are still lighting up? Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. The body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal. The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. This isnt always easy, especially if everyone around you is smoking and offering you cigarettes. It may help to have your reasons for not smoking ready for times you may feel the pressure, such as I just dont like it or I want to stay in shape for soccer (or football, basketball, or other sport). The good news for people who dont smoke or who want to quit is that studies show that the number of teens who smoke has dropped dramatically. Today, about 20% of high school students smoke which means 4 out of 5 dont. If you do smoke and want to quit, you have lots of information and support available. Different approaches to quitting work for different people. For some, quitting cold turkey is best. On the contrary, others find that a slower approach is the way to go. Some people find that it helps to go to a support group especially for teens. When quitting, it can be helpful to realize that the first few days are the hardest. So dont give up. CIn a small banana plantation near Kampala, the trees are healthy and green, but Andrew Kiggundu does not like what he sees. The disease on the leaves you see right now is not the wilt(枯萎病), it is a different disease called black sigatoka(香蕉叶斑病). It is just killing off the leaves and causing great loss. This is a big problem, although of course not as much as the wilt, because the wilt destroys the whole plant. Andrew Kiggundu works with the National Agricultural Research Organization, also known as NARO. The Ugandan government agency is developing genetically engineer bananas. Uganda is the worlds top consumer of bananas. NARO Research Director says this is why it is so important to produce healthy plants. The central African nation already permits testing of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Lawmakers are considering a bill that would permit the development and distribution of such organisms throughout the country. But some activists say genetically modified organisms would be dangerous to human health and the environment. Most genetically modified seeds are patented, this means farmers must purchase them after each planting. This might be possible for profitable farmers, but smaller farmers depend on their own seeds. Selling genetically modified seeds to small farmers could trap them. A public institution is developing Ugandas genetically modified bananas. NARO says no patent laws will restrict their use. But MrOlupot, an soil expert at Makerere University, says this would probably not be true with genetically modified crops introduced to Uganda in future. MrKiggundu says opponents of genetically modified plans have been strong in their criticisms. He says many farmers are now afraid of GMOs. The Ugandan parliament is expected to pass the Biotechnology and Biosafety Bill before the end of the year.51. What has happened to the banana trees according to Paragraph 1?A. The banana trees are dying from wilt and sigatoka.B. The leaves will come off and losses may be caused. C. The trees will die soon and leaves are turning black. D. The diseases mentioned can destroy the whole plant. 52. Why is NARO developing genetically engineer bananas?A. To improve peoples health and environment.B. To satisfy the demand for bananas in Uganda.C. To develop organism throughout the country. D. To help a bill about testing GMOs get passed.53.Which of the following might challenge the smaller farmers according to the text?A. Patent laws restrict the use of modern technology.B. Officials hope the new technology will reduce the number of traffic accidents. Automobile manufactures may be required to equip all new cars with what are being called vehicle-to-vehicle communication devices within the next 3 years.Vehicle-to-vehicle, or V2V, is a communication technology. It enables vehicles to share information about their speed and movement at a rate of 10 times a second. Cars will be able to identify possible dangers within about 300 meters. The cars will then warn their drivers or even take action to avoid accidents. The drivers will be able to see, hear and even feel the warning signals through shaking of the seat. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expects the new system to reduce the number of car accidents by as much as 80 percent.Greg Winfree is with the U.S. Department of Transportation. He says the new technology will change the way people deal with traffic accidents. The first 50 years of transportation safety were focused on surviving crashes. We see the future as technology that avoids crashes overall, said Winfree.Critics admit that V2V technology is a major development, but they are concerned about possible conflicts with other wireless devices. They say those devices already operate in the wireless frequencies(频率) planned for V2V technology.Scott Belcher is the chief operating officer of the group Intelligent Transportation Society of America. If somehow we are sharing this spectrum(频谱)and theres interference and so we could have prevented the crash, but we are not able to prevent the crash because someone else is using the spectrum, said Belcher.Scott Belcher says people may also be concerned about their privacy. He worries about the possibility of using V2V technology to follow individual drivers and document their driving habits. Government agencies and private industry have already invested almost $1 billion in research.U.S. off
