外研高中1册Module 2 教学资源Section 2 Background information on teachers(2)Module 2 My New TeachersPart Two: Teaching Resources第二部分 教学资源Section Two: Background information on teachers 1.About teacherSure, its good to get along with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant. And yes, its good to get along with your teacher because, in general, its smart to learn how to relate to the different types of people youll meet through-out your life. But really, theres one super important reason why you should get along with your teacher. When you do, “learning bursts right open”, says Evelyn Vuko, a longtime teacher who writes an education column called “Teacher says” for the Washington Post.In fact, kids who get well along with their teachers not only learn more, but they are more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school issues, such as bullying. As a kid in a primary or middle school, youre at a wonderful stage in your life. Youre like a sponge, able to soak up lots of new and exciting information. On top of that, youre able to think about all this information in new ways. Your teacher knows that, and in most cases, it is very exciting to be the person whos giving you all that material and helping you put it together. Remember, teachers are people, too, and they feel great if you are open to what theyre teaching you. Thats why they wanted to be teachers in the first place to teach. Some kids may be able to learn in any situation, whether they like the teacher or not. But most kids are sensitive to the way they get along with the teacher, and if things arent going well, they wont learn as well and wont enjoy being in class. 2.Working conditions of teachersSeeing students develop new skills and gain an appreciation of knowledge and learning can be very rewarding. However, teaching may be frustrating when one is dealing with unmotivated or disrespectful students. Occasionally, teachers must cope with unruly behavior and violence in the schools. Teachers may experience stress in dealing with large classes, heavy workloads, or old schools that are run down and lack many modern amenities. Accountability standards also may increase stress levels, with teachers expected to produce students who are able to exhibit satisfactory performance on standardized tests in core subjects. Many teachers, particularly in public schools, are also frustrated by the lack of control they have over what they are required to teach.Teachers in private schools generally enjoy smaller class sizes and more control over establishing the curriculum and setting standards for performance and discipline. Their students also tend to be more motivated, since private schools can be selective in their admissions processes.Teachers are sometimes isolated from their colleagues because they work alone in a classroom of students. However, some schools allow teachers to work in teams and with mentors to enhance their professional development.Including school duties performed outside the classroom, many teachers work more than 40 hours a week. Part-time schedules are more common among preschool and kindergarten teachers. Although some school districts have gone to all-day kindergartens, most kindergarten teachers still teach two kindergarten classes a day. Most teachers work the traditional 10-month school year with a 2-month vacation during the summer. During the vacation break, those on the 10-month schedule may teach in summer sessions, take other jobs, travel, or pursue personal interests. Many enroll in college courses or workshops to continue their education. Teachers in districts with a year-round schedule typically work 8 weeks, are on vacation for 1 week, and have a 5-week midwinter break. Preschool teachers working in day care settings often work year round. The government has tenure laws that prevent public school teachers from being fired without just cause and due process. Teachers may obtain tenure after they have satisfactorily completed a probationary period of teaching, normally 3 years. Tenure does not absolutely guarantee a job, but it does provide some security.3.Students in high schools in AmericaSecondary education in America, which is known as “high school” in general, is in one period or divided into two periods. The first two or three years are called “junior high school” and the senior classes are called “senior high school”。 These two periods which are similar to the names used in our country.American students enjoy free education until they are eighteen years old. This is different from what students do in our country, because, you know, children in China receive free education of nine years, no matter how old they are when they graduate from senior high school. American children have little difficulty in going to senior high school because of the free education system. But things are different if they want to go to special schools or classes which are set up for children showing academic ability.High school students in America take part in many activities outside the classroom, such as joining a musical group or a sports team. Among those activities, perhaps, the football team is the most important. But just as middle school students do in our country, American students in high schools have to work hard if they want to go on to a university of high reputation after they finish high school because these universities take in senior high school students with high marks.American high school students do not specialize in any particular direction, and they take classes in all kinds of subjects all through the high school period. Sometimes some of them complain that the progress is too slow and they do not learn much. This is because students of all
