Thewayweconductbusinessthroughproduction,transportation,consumptionandthediscardingofmaterials,allattributetothelandfillissuesthatarerapidlybecomingarealproblemforourgovernmentandcitizensalike.
But,whatiftherewasawaytocreateasuccessfulbusinesswithoutthewaste?Beingmindfulofyourwasteintheworkplaceisn’tsomethingthatisbeingbrushedofflikeitmighthavebeentenyearsago,withmoreandmoreemployeesandmanagersimplementinghugestrategiestoensuretheirbusinessesareoperatinginaneco-consciousmannerforthebettermentofourenvironment.
AccordingtotheZeroWasteAlliance,“ZeroWasteisagoalthatisethical,economical,efficientandvisionary,toguidepeopleinchangingtheirlifestylesandpracticestoemulatesustainablenaturalcycles,wherealldiscardedmaterialsaredesignedtobecomeresourcesforotherstouse.”
“ZeroWastemeansdesigningandmanagingproductsandprocessestosystematicallyavoidandeliminatethevolumeandtoxicityofwasteandmaterials,conserveandrecoverallresources,andnotburnorburythem.ImplementingZeroWastewilleliminatealldischargestoland,waterorairthatareathreattoplanetary,human,animalorplanthealth.”

Setyourwastereductiongoals
Onceyou’vestartedworkingwiththeintentiontobuildazero-wastebusiness,understandthatthismighttakesometimetoeffectivelybeimplemented(especiallyinlargeandestablishedcompanies).Withyourwastemanagementemployeeorteam,setrealisticgoalsin-houseforyoutoaimfortoonedaywhenthecompanybecomescompletelyzero-waste!Itcouldbethatyouwanttoreachzero-wasteby2025buthaveyearlyKPIsinplacethatwillbuildtowardsthatlarger,long-termgoal.Remember,wastemanagementcanbeorchestratedonmanydifferentlevelsinthecompany,andtocompletelychangeyourcurrentlevelofwasteisnotgoingtohappeninonego.Setattainableshort,mediumandlong-termgoals,andworktowardsthem!
