Thebreathingchamberwassurroundedbypanelsthatpreventedsurfaceswimming,yet

swimmingbelowthesurfaceforabout200feetwouldgivethesealsaccesstoafeederwhere

theycouldeatasmuchfishastheyliked.Oncethesealsgotfamiliarwiththesetup,the

researchersstartedtograduallychangethecompositionoftheairinthebreathingchamber,

increasingorreducingthelevelsofoxygenandCO₂toseeaneffectontheirbehavior.Sure

enough:thehigherthelevelofoxygen,thelongerthesealsstayedatthefeeder.

Thefindingsuggeststhatsealsdon’tjustphysicallyrespondtooxygenlevelsbychanging

theirheartrateorbreathing,butthattheyaresufficientlyawareofthemtochangetheir

behavior.Thisabilitywouldputsealsinaclassbeyondanylandmammalsthathavebeen

tested.Sinceoxygenlevelsonlandremainstable,humansdon’tseemtohaveevolved(演化)

tonoticelowbloodoxygenlevels,sometimesnotevenwhenthey’reabouttopassoutinfree-

diving.
