withshelvesthatwouldholdthebooksata15-degreeanglesothattheywouldstayinplacewhile

intransit.CollinsnamedherbookstoreStRita'sTravelingBookstore,whichhasbeenontheroad

thenreturnedto2moredaysoflimitedsleep.Allpeoples'eatingpatterns,weightgain,and

changesininsulin(胰岛索)sensilivilyaretrackedthroughout

Comparedtopeoplewhosleptnormally,thosewhoonlyslept5hoursanightsnackedmore

afterdinnerandgainedanaverageofabout3poundsduringthestudy.Theirbodies'sensitivityto

insulindecreasedby13%overthetwo-weekperiod.Peopleinthethirdgroupexperiencedsome

mildimprovementduringtheweekend:theywerelesslikelytosnackatnightduringtherecovery

period.Butthosebenefitsdiedoutwhentheyreturnedtotheirweekdaysleep-restrictedschedule.

Theyalsogainedanaverageofabout3poundsduringthestudyandexperienceda27%decrease

ininsulinsensitivity.Furthermore,duringtheweekend,totalsleepdurationwaslowerinwomen

thaninmen,andenergyintakedecreasedtobaselinelevelsinwomenbutnotinmen.
