2、 years, with the improvement of transportation and peoples living standards, cultural heritage tourism is becoming the most rapidly growing sector within the tourism industry. It is about exploring unique environments, engaging with cultural splendors, experiencing a different way of life and buildi

3、ng lasting memories. However, mass tourism also inevitably exerts some impact on the preservation of cultural heritage. The issue of how to enhance your trip and simultaneously benefit world heritage sites is therefore of great significance nowadays. In this unit thought-provoking articles concernin

4、g the relations between tourism and cultural heritage preservation will be presented and some travel tips will also be offered to promote students awareness of “Green Travel”.,Unit Overview,Background Information,Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today and what we pass on to fu

5、ture generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africas Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our worlds h

6、eritage. Traveling to world heritage sites is rewarding, but mass tourism also causes damage to those sites. Travelers yearning to explore prehistoric Stonehenge or Machu Piccus Inca ruins had better start packing, as both are on a list of endangered destinations, according to a British travel magaz

7、ine. Wanderlust Magazines (www.wanderlust.co.uk) second annual “Threatened Wonders List” has identified eight top travel picks that have been over-exploited. Most, including the haunting Jordan desert valley of Wadi Rum, made famous in the cinema classic Lawrence of Arabia, are plagued by tourists,

8、poor planning and shoddy security. In addition, the magazine also suggests that travelers should avoid Stonehenge perhaps the worlds most famous prehistoric site and a center for ancient British pagan celebration unless they wish to see a carpark and glimpse the stone monoliths from a disappointingl

9、y remote viewing area.,Background Information,Another famous site on the list is Perus Machu Piccu, which is plagued by trash and encroaching minibus routes. Up to 2,500 tourists a day trample the mountainside ruins, making it impossible to protect against wear and tear. To protect these endangered

39、cipates that the numbers will grow up to 1.6 billion in the next ten years. Nowadays, within the tourism industry, cultural heritage is the most rapidly growing sector4. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) , “cultural heritage tourism means traveling to experience the pl

40、aces and activities that authentically5 represent the stories and people of the past and present. It includes irreplaceable6, historic, cultural and natural resources”. In other words, it is the kind of tourism where heritage is the most important reason for the travel and it becomes a central part

41、of the travel experience. Accordingly, tourism is becoming a tool to preserve cultural heritage in three ways: designing sustainable7 tourism policies, creating economic benefits to communities and developing virtual8 traveler communities interested in sharing and preserving heritage.,Tourism: The P

The second positive effect of tourism over cultural heritage preservation is the economic effect. Professor Daniel Stynes

45、 affirms11 that tourism is one effective way of redistributing12 wealth. The spending of visitors within the destination is reflected in the increased sales of products and services which benefit local businesses. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, cultural and heritage visit

These interactive sites are virtual places where travelers can find, share, learn and explore information about cultural heritage experiences, communities and destinations. Additionally, these sites are encouraging travelers to protect and respect travel destinations as well as contribute to local World Heritage commun
