47%werelookingattransitioningemployeesfromdecliningrolesintootherrolesinthe

“Thekeypointisnotthatwemightnothaveenoughjobs,”Leopoldsays.“Theissueis

thatjobsmaylookmuchdifferent.”Thejobsmostlikelytobeaffectedarelargelywhite-collar

Researchersworkedwith20hedgehogsfromDanishwildliferescuecentres,studyinghowtheir

brainsrespondedtoshortburstsofsound.Theyfoundtherewasbrainactivitywhenhedgehogs

heardfrequenciesbetweenfourand85kilohertz(kHz).

Frequencymeasureshowmuchasoundwavevibratesinonesecond.Anythingover20kHz,which

isthelimitthathumanscanhear,isinthe“ultrasonic”range.Dogscanhearupto45kHzand

catsupto65kHz.Inotherwords,hedgehogscanhearsuperhigh-pitchednoisesthathumans,dogs

andcatscan’tpickup.

Rasmussensaidmoreresearchisneededtoworkoutexactlywhichsoundsputoffhedgehogs,

butoncetheyknowtheycoulddesignadevicethatgivesoffanultrasoundnoise.Thiscouldbe

attachedtocarsandlawnmowerstoscarehedgehogsawayfromdanger,butnotbeannoyingtohumans

ormostpets.
