1、Teaching English to Children 2 credits/2 hoursThis elective course has five objectives: (1) to examine childrens English learning problems and discuss the solutions (2) to design various activities based on different teaching methods and principles (3) to cultivate students creative ability for teac
2、hing (For example, designing and using creative picture books or combining English rapping and chants with hip hop dance) (4) to apply management and counseling skills in the English classroom, and (5) to help students to be well prepared for future teaching career needs.兒童英語教學此選修課程主要目標有五: (1) 調查兒童英
3、語學習困境並探討改進之法(2) 運用多樣教學法設計教學活動(3) 培養學生教學上之多元創造力 ( 例如: 英文繪本創意教學, 嘻哈與歌謠之結合教學等 )(4) 輔導技巧於班級管理之訓練(5) 促進學生兒童英語教學之專業能力英文閱讀策略 2學分/ 2小時(選修)本課程擬增進的學生的英文閱讀能力。教材以多元文化及日常生活有關的主題為主。授以有效的閱讀策略,以小組討論合作學習之方式來學習。本課程最終目標將使學生成為主動的閱讀者。運用在課堂上的有效的閱讀策略包括圖解法、自問問題、找出主要觀念、作大事記表、推理、預測、略讀、作摘要、因果關係、使用前後文所提示之線索、比較與對照、釋義、分辨事實與意見、作大
4、綱、和後設認知策略等。 潘玲媺English Reading Strategies 2 credits/ 2 hours (Elective)This course aims to enhance students' English reading proficiency by introducing effective English reading strategies. The teaching material draws on multiple cultures and authentic topics. The instructor provides students wi
5、th effective reading strategies to be employed before, during and after reading to improve their English reading comprehension and cultivate their skills for lifelong learning by the cooperative learning method. The ultimate goal of the course is to help students to be active readers. The effective
6、reading strategies applied in class include using graphic organizers, asking oneself questions, finding main ideas, making a time line, making inferences, predicting outcomes, scanning, summarizing, recognizing cause and effect, using context clues, comparing and contrasting, paraphrasing, distingui
7、shing fact and opinion, outlining, and critical thinking strategies. 潘玲媺Selected Readings in English Literature 2 credits/ 2 hours Shirley YangThrough the reading of selected literary works in English and American literature, this course aims to develop students literary taste, enrich their understa
8、nding of life, and enhance their reading comprehension. Reading materials are mainly short stories; poetry is briefly introduced. In addition to the interpretation of literary works, students will be also provided with a knowledge of literary terms related to the writing techniques employed in a spe
9、cific story/poem. 英美文學作品選讀 2學分/ 2小時楊淑麗透過英美文學作品選讀,本課程旨在培養學生的文學素養,豐富其對生活及生命的領悟,同時提高其英語閱讀能力。教材以英美短篇小說為主,英詩為輔。除了文學作品意義的詮釋與賞析,學生亦將學習每篇作品中與寫作技巧相關之文學專門術語。Current Issues in English 2 credits/ 2 hours Shirley Yang With current articles from the New York Times and the Washington Post as the main material, thi
10、s course aims to enhance students news-reading comprehension as well as their cross-cultural understanding. Newsworthy articles in areas including politics, business, the arts, sports and editorials are selected to expand students vision of the world. Supplemental materials include CNN TV news and I
11、CRT radio news broadcasts. Students are required to choose two important current issues and make English oral presentations in class.時事英文 2學分/ 2小時 楊淑麗以紐約時報及華盛頓郵報為主要教材,本課程學習目標為提昇學生新聞英語閱讀能力及跨文化了解。文章選取以新聞重要性及擴展學生世界觀為主要考量,主題涵蓋政治、經濟、藝術、體育、及社論等。補充教材包括CNN電視新聞及ICRT廣播新聞。學生需於課堂上輪流就前一週重要之時事,擇一做英文口頭報告。觀光英語實務與實習
12、: (by汪友于) 2學分/ 2小時本課程在第一學期主要是提供學生各種相關於觀光領域的語言活動,包括閱讀文章或從業界工作人員和顧客之間的實況對話來或獲取知識。教材涵蓋真實的宣傳手冊、文件以及塑造幫助學生們熟悉真實生活的情境。在第二學期,學生們需要到飯店、餐廳或旅行社,為了增進對觀光業所使用的英語用法有更清楚的瞭解。English for Tourism: Application and Practicum (by Lucy) 2 credits/ 2 hoursThis course, in the first semester, aims to provide students with a
13、 variety of language-based activities related to tourism. These may include reading passages for information or reality-based dialogs between people working in the industry and customers. The text contains authentic brochures, documents, and forms to help familiarize students with real-life situatio
14、ns. In the second semester, students are required to go to hotels, restaurants, or travel agencies to develop a stronger understanding of English usage within the tourism industry.Explorations in American Culture 2 hours/ 2 creditsHolliThis content-based course is offered as an elective to senior st
15、udents who are interested in putting their English skills to use exploring American culture. The topical nature of the course is meant to give students specific insight into American thinking and behavior. The content is focused on fundamental issues such as the ideal of individualism, the importanc
16、e of privacy & convenience, the influential role of the media, the effects of international “superpower” status, the forces of economics & business, the emphasis on science & the law, the obsession with health, and the reality of class & social divisions, among others. The course emp
17、hasizes finding cultural information from a wide variety of source materials including film, music, TV shows and ads, cartoons, and newspaper clippings. Students may also be asked to read short articles and do internet research to find information to contribute to class discussions and periodic essa
18、ys. While the content centers around U.S. society, the activities students participate in such as debates, group discussions, online research, as well as individual spoken and written reactionsreinforce English skills applicable to any topic. Students are encouraged to make cultural comparisons, thi
19、nk critically about issues, and state their opinions; skills which will undoubtedly be useful in future situations of international communication.美國文化探討這是一門以內容為主的課程,主要是提供給有興趣活用英文技巧來探討美國文化的四年級學生選修。課程的主題可讓學生對美國人的思考和行為有特別的認識。 內容主要是基本的議題,像是個人主義的理想,隱私及便利的重要性,有影響力的角色:媒體,國際超級強權地位的影響,經濟和商業的力量,對科學和法律的重視,對健康的

21、o expose pre-experience students of business English to the most current business topics from which they can acquire not only up-to-date business concepts but also related English vocabulary and typical phrases. In addition, this course also aims to provide an interface between the English language
22、students and the business world, where most language majors find themselves out-of-place and lacking in confidence. The topics introduced in this course are therefore more on the human side, rather than the numerical aspect, of business administration so as to strengthen students confidence and adap
23、tability in the business workplace.
