controlgroupinabstractthinking.Whiletheyweretoldthestudywasaboutcognitiveprocesses,
participantswereaskedaboutinterests,witharoundhalfsayingtheyhadanartistichobby.Among
those,theeffectwasgreater:thosewithanartistichobbyinthebeautygroupscoredover25%higher
onaveragefbrabstractthinkingthanthosewithanartistichobbyinthecontrolgroup.
Emotionalstatesofparticipantswerealsomeasuredbyaskingabouttheirfeelingswhilecompleting
thegallerytask.Acrossallparticipants,thoseinthebeautygroupreportedanaverageof23%higher
levelsof"transformativeandselftranscendent径elings“suchasfeelingmoved,enlightenedand
inspired-thanthecontrolgroup.Importantly,however,thebeautygroupdidnotreportfeelingany
happierthanthecontrolgroup,suggestingthatitwastheengagementwithbeautythatinfluenced
