1Lead-in

ShowsomepicturesofstudentsindifferentschoolactivitiesonthePPT,suchasstudentsplayingfootballontheplayground,readingbooksinthelibrary,havingaclassintheclassroom.

T:"Goodmorning/afternoon,dearstudents!Lookatthesepictures.Whatarethesestudentsdoing?CanyoudescribethescenesinEnglish?"

Inviteseveralstudentstoanswer.Forexample,astudentmayanswer,"Theyareplayingfootballontheplayground."

Usesomesimplewaystohelpstudentsunderstandthemeaning.For"haveagoodtime",theteachercansay,"Whenyouarehappyandenjoyyourself,youhaveagoodtime.Forexample,onweekends,youcanplaygameswithyourfriendsandhaveagoodtime."

Conductaquickvocabularyquiz.TheteachersaysawordorphraseinChinese,andstudentsquicklyrespondwiththeEnglishequivalent.Forexample,theteachersays"学生",andstudentssay"student".

Skimming

Givestudentsthereadingpassagein2a-2b.Letthemreadthepassagequicklywithoutstoppingtolookupnewwords.

Setaquestion:"Whatisthemainideaofthispassage?Isitabouttheschoolfacilities,schoolactivities,orschoolrules?"

Afterstudentsfinishskimming,askthemtoraisetheirhandsandsharetheiranswers.Then,summarizethemainideaofthepassagetogether:"Thispassagemainlydescribestheschoollifeofsomestudents,includingtheiractivitiesduringandafterclass."

Scanning

Askstudentstoreadthepassageagain,thistimemorecarefully,andfindtheanswerstothefollowingdetailedquestions:

"Wheredostudentsplaybasketball?"

"WhoteachesEnglishintheschool?"

"Whatdostudentsdoafterclass?"

WritethesequestionsontheblackboardorshowthemonthePPT.Walkaroundtheclassroomtoobservestudents'readingprocessandofferhelpifneeded.

Afterstudentsfinishscanning,askthemtosharetheiranswers.Checktheanswerstogetherandexplainanymisunderstandings.Forexample,iftheanswerto"Wheredostudentsplaybasketball?"is"ontheplayground",askstudentstofindtherelevantsentenceinthepassagetosupporttheanswer.

Dividethepassageintoseveralparts.Analyzeeachpartsentencebysentence.

Forexample,inasentencelike"ThestudentshaveEnglishclassesinthemorning.TheirEnglishteacher,Mr.Smith,isverykind."

First,askstudentsaboutthesubject"Thestudents"andtheverb"have"inthesimplepresenttense.Reviewtheformofthesimplepresenttenseforthethird-personplural.

Dividestudentsintogroupsoffourorfive.Poseadiscussiontopic:"Comparetheschoollifeinthepassagewithourschoollife.Whatarethesimilaritiesanddifferences?"

Eachgroupmembertakesturnstosharetheirthoughts.Thegroupleadercanwritedownthekeypoints.

Theteacherwalksaroundthegroups,listeningtotheirdiscussionsandprovidingguidance.Forexample,ifagrouphastroublefindingdifferences,theteachercanprompt,"Thinkaboutthetimeofclasses,thetypesofactivities,orthewayteachersteach."

Afterabout5minutesofdiscussion,inviteseveralgroupstosharetheirresultswiththewholeclass.Othergroupscanaskquestionsoraddtheirownopinions.

4.2Role-play

Basedonthepassage,designarole-playactivity.Supposeaforeignstudentcomestovisityourschool.Youneedtointroduceyourschoollifetohim/her.

Studentscanchoosetobethevisitororthehost.Theyshouldusetheinformationfromthepassageandtheirownschoollifeexperiencetocreatedialogues.

Givestudentssometimetoprepare.Then,inviteseveralpairsofstudentstocometothefrontoftheclassandperformtheirdialogues.Aftereachperformance,letotherstudentsgivefeedback,suchaspraisinggoodexpressionsorsuggestingimprovementsinpronunciationorcontent.
