duringthePersianWars.In146B.C.,theRomansgainedcontrolofGreeceand,

therefore,oftheOlympicGames.In85B.C.,theRomangeneralSullaconqueredthe

sanctuarytofinancehiscampaignagainstMithridates.Sullaalsomovedthe175th

OlympiadtoRome.Thegameswereheldeveryfouryearsfrom776B.C.to393A.D.

WiththespreadofChristianity,thegamesdeclinedinpopularity.Theywerefinally

abolishedbytheChristianByzantineEmperorTheodosiusIin393A.D.Theancient

OlympicGameslastedfor1170years.ModernOlympicsTherevivalofthemodem

OlympicswasonaccountofaFrencheducatornamedBaronPierredeCoubertin.He

startedthisdreamin1894whenhefoundedtheInternationalOlympicCommitteewith

theintentionofrestoringtheAncientOlympicGameswhichhadbeenheldbetween776

DespitestrongoppositionBaronassembled79delegatesfrom12countriestoattendthe

internationalcongressforthere-establishmentoftheOlympicGames.Itwasdecidedto

holdthefirstmodernOlympicsinAthensintwoyears'time.TheAthensGamesof1896

wereagreatsuccess.TheOlympicshadreturnedtothelandoftheirbirth.OnApril5th

theGameswereopenedbyKingGeorgeofGreece,infrontofacrowdof60,000.The

originalOlympicmedalsweresilverandonlyawardedtothewinnerofanevent.

ThirteencountriescompetedattheAthensGamesin1896.Ninesportswereonthe

agenda:cycling,fencing,gymnastics,lawntennis,shooting,swimming,trackandfield,

weightlifting,andwrestling.The14-manU.S.teamdominatedthetrackandfieldevents,

takingfirstplacein9ofthe12events.TheGameswereasuccess,andasecond
